As the title says.
Short story: I need an arthroscopy on my ankle.
Long story for those interested.
Back in June this year I began noticing a short, sharp pain through my
ankle when my foot began to bend upwards (toe to shin). After a quick
trip to the GP, I was referred for an x-ray the next day. Those of you
at Fluck may have noticed I wore an ankle support for some days, that I
didn’t ride much and I probably hobbled around every so often when I
did ride and hurt my ankle further.
I heard that the results of my x-rays showed no sign of fracture –
phew! However, there were signs of an abnormality and as a result I was
referred to see a foot surgeon. That process took ages and I only saw
my surgeon a few days ago.
First off the nurse took my blood pressure and made me stand on the
scales – 8stone9. She goes to note it down then says “Actually, you are
still wearing your clothes so I will put it down as 8stone”.
Apparently, I was wearing reali heavy clothes.
Next, I saw the surgeon. He studied the x-rays, looking for the fault
that the radiologist had pointed out. Tiverton’s radiologists must have
great qualifications as not only did my surgeon point out that the
abnormality they had stated was actually normal, he realised that in
the notes they had been writing about my right foot, when in fact it
was my left.
He ignored the notes and made me lie on the table, and pushed my foot
in all directions, prodded it and just generally put me in pain. The
xrays clearly showed nothing wrong with the bone, but he can tell there
is definitely something wrong with my ankle so I’ve now been referred
for an MRI scan. For those that know your medical jargon, he said
"degenerative change at the talonavicular joint". Even if nothing is
apparent after the MRI scan then he will still go ahead and perform an
arthroscopy to try and find what is wrong and sort it.
Recovery period:
2 weeks then stitches come out
3 to 4 weeks then I can begin to jog again
6 weeks and I can do what I did before
So that period is fine, it’s just the waiting time before that. I’m now
unable to ride well because I end up in agony and it’s also affecting
my football at college. The season starts on Wednesday and it looks as
though I’m going to miss most of it. I’m terrified of the thought of
surgery, but now just want it to happen as soon as possible. I'll keep
you updated.
The cause of all this... I don’t reali know, but I would take a guess
that it has a lot to do with unicycling. Bad technique on drops would
damage the joint surely? I think even when I have had the surgery, I
will be wary to ride how I want. No more drops above 1m for me for a
while haha
Amanda
ps. yeh i know this isn't nearly as bad as kris' ACL but i thought you
might be curious when my part in the next unigirls video is like 2
clips long.
