Sold a few of these while at Morgul-Bismark(Phinney's
shop here in Boulder). A steel Serotta frameset with a
paint job. Nice framesets. Much nicer than the gadgety
Serottas of today.

To expand a little...this was basically Serotta's crit bike;
I don't know how long they were made, basically 91 is what I
know about because I bought a Serotta Nhx at that time and
still have the catalog, as well as the bike itself. The DP
had steeper angles, less fork rake, and shorter chainstays
than the standard Serotta bikes. At the time the SLX framed
Nhx and DPs were Serotta's entry level bikes (if one can
call any Serotta "entry level"😉 with the Colorado II and LT
above them in the lineup. The pix on Ebay are different than
my catalog, which has standard Serotta decals with a couple
of Davis Phinney stickers. I wonder if DP didn't sell them
under his own name after Serotta stopped offering it as a
standard choice. We got a team deal on either SLX frame at
the time, which was basically the year when Serotta stopped
building with SLX. I always kind of figured that they had
the tubes left over and were sort of dumping the bikes.

Dear Tom,

I noticed the bike sold for $500 (it is Wednesday). I hope
if you wanted it, it is yours. I own a Phinney edition frame
I bought from a racer who changed teams and no longer needed
it. One interesting difference is that the Davis Phinney
name was not on the down tube, but rather "signed" in gold
on the front of the top tube. The paint was dark purple with
the rest of the lettering in Day-Glo green. An 80s paint
scheme if ever there was one. Unfortunately, on my bike, the
green had faded to a sickly yellow so I stripped it and am
in the process of doing a custom 2 tone candy apple yellow
and blue scheme. I bought Serotta stickers to replace the
originals and will replace the original signature with
decals made from photographs of the original.

The bikes were available in Boulder, Colorado at a LBS
called the Morgul Bismarck, owned by Davis Phinney and other
biking notables of the day. The store name was taken from a
locally famous road course.

I think $500 is a reasonable amount to pay. There's a used
bike shop in my town that sells Serottas from that era in
the $500-$900 range depending on condition. Shipping? The
seller has 100% positive feedback.

I raced on a Davis Phinney in 1990 when I was with the Le
Peep/Morgul Bismark team. Check out the 5th photo on this
link for a picture of it:

It was very solid bike that sprinted well. The team
replaced it the next year and I've always regretted not
trying to keep it.
