Checking up on this on the web, I see Tom Dolan (medley) also had recent knee surgery. But Lenny
Krayzelburg (backstroke) had knee surgery last year also. Backstroke would seem to be pretty
safe as far as the knees go ...

Was it knee surgery? I was under the impression Krayzelburg had shoulder surgery.

My backstroke would be safe for anyone. It's slower than my breaststroke.

I believe Krayzelburg had surgery on his shoulders AND knees. Who said swimming was a
    low-impact sport?

A backstroker who has surgery is probably less amazing than a backstroker who doesn't. With the
internal rotation of the shoulder for that stroke, it's almost guranteed to cause impingement
    problems in the shoulder.

I've also seen video of Lenny swimming. He had terrible technique for shoulder problems. His arm was
rotated before it even left the water to go above him. That is, his palm was already facing outward,
thumb down, as he started to sweep his arm up. I think the preferred way is to have pinky down
towards the water during the recovery phase to limit the bad shoulder rotation. And only as you
reach behind your head do you rotate the shoulder.

Of course, he's Olympic champion. His lifelong injuries will almost certainly be less than most
    football players.

PS I have no idea what happened with his knees to need surgery.
