I like my Cycleops Magneto magnet trainer as my choice for an entry level trainer. For around $200 USD it has a nice power curve and met my budget.

If you want to spend more, there are many upgrades in this area including interaction with many computer programs for training and performance measurement. If you've got the money, this is another opportunity to get crazy. Set your budget and your goals and then begin your search.

I've been thinking about one as well since daylights are getting shorter.

I don't want a trainer.... I want something smoooooth with electronics for measuring my efforts...and possibly programmable too as well.

I've seen some posts on the Kettler...and a spanish model..forgot the name.
Also, the top of the line Cycle ops stationary bike...

Problem is...none of the retail stores have any of these in my ara to try out.
So could some one PLEASE shed some thoughts.

I've got the Cycle Ops magnetic one, bought it from REI. If I were to do it again, I'd go with the fluid version though, as it offers a bit more resistance.

martin, which modesl are you referring to? and did you get it sight unseen or does one of the REI store in our area have it on the floor for you to try it out.

Does it have virtual mode? programmable? does it simulate down/up hill well?

Well no...because I wanted more statbility and feel from a good stationary bike...

Here's a thread that I found here in this forum talking about various possible models...but none of them can be found in Atlanta or close by area.
