Improved Climbing Through Dehydration

  1. Per Dr. Ferrari from CyclingNews:

    Analyzing the intermediate times of the excellent performance of Santi Perez
    in Sunday's uphill time trial, we get some pretty interesting data. The
    Phonak rider rode the first 6.7 km of easy uphill (gradient of 2 percent) in
    about 9'30", while he took 20'30" to climb up to km 13 of the Alto de
    Monachil ascent, with a difference in height of 610 m. Therefore his VAM on
    this distance was 1785 m/h, visibly inferior to his performance yesterday
    (1878 m/h) on the same climb, at the end of a 167 km stage. This might seem
    strange and surprising, but not really so: let's remember Lance Armstrong's
    time trial performances on l'Alpe d'Huez or Mont Ventoux, which also
    resulted in inferior times to other attempts at the end of longer stages in
    the past.

    Apart from possible external factors (such as wind and temperature), we
    should remember that in a normal stage the first part of the final climb is
    usually ridden drafting from other riders, thus saving about 15-30 watts,
    depending on speed. Another factor could be the body weight of the rider,
    which after 4 hours of racing has usually decreased by 1-2 kg, compared to a
    time trial situation. Two kg corresponds more or less to 3 percent of the
    uphill performance: on a VAM of 1800 m/h it makes a difference of more than
    50 m/h.

    So by this reasoning the problem Lance had in that 2003 Tour time trial
    was that it wasn't a mountain time trial where he could have used that
    (alleged) 15% weight loss to his advantage. By sitting in with your buddies
    for the first four hours, you should have a 1 1/2% to 3% advantage on the
    dummies who let you wheelsuck for hours.

    Excuse me. Gotta go. My veterinarian just arrived and I have to pack
    some of my Lab's blood for use in the upcoming homologous season.

  2. You proved that Armstrong was lying. He wasn't really dehydrated... what
    happened was some sort of drug mixup, right?

    Actually, losing weight is much more important for climbing than for a flat
    time trial.

    factor it's body conditon plays a equal if not greater factor in
    output. Let's remember that Indurain weighed a lot more than most
    climbers and he still able to out climb most riders.

    Orange juice is reputed to work well in such cases of dehydration.

    Climbing with a group has some advantages such as pacing. Another
    advantage is that you are able judge the other riders condition. But
    the aerodynamic aspects are fairly negligible. Now I can see where
    descending might provide some advantages especially if there is
    multiple cols.

  10. Or maybe he was just blubbering...This guy knows a lot, but really
    he's just telling us the least amount so that people read it, but not
    so much that we actually learn anything.

    I would say that 1-2 kg of dehydration weight loss would lead to far
    more performance decrement than the reduced weight would help. EPO
    would help even more!

    Yes, well some advantages - like pacing- is a big deal. There is no
    doubt that there are both psychological and physical components to
    riding/climbing. Pacing helps both.

    4 calories/gram of sugar.

    Note: I said "glycogen" not "glucose". 1 g of glucose is bound with about 4g
    of water to make glycogen. Thus (completely botching the significant
    figures), 4.182 calories of "glyocgen" weighs approx. 5 grams. So 1 gram of
    glycogen will give you a bit over 0.8 calories.

    saying that Perez had a lower amount of water on board.
