Hmmm ... now lets see - invent something like that, have
an instant marketing success - retire .... I wish !!!Being retired isn't all it's cracked up to be y'know. People
think thatfor THEM!! (And I'm not kidding).
When I wasn't retired, I had to work to find the time to do
stuff for me, so when I did retire, I thought "This is IT
man, do what you want, when you want and for as LONG as you
want". Oh yeah, like THAT happened!I'm STILL having to work to find the time to do the
things *I* want to do and it's been 18 years since I
"clocked on" anywhere.Quoted message said:

People think thatOh, I think I could live with the pain :-))
Ah yes, but then I'm quite able to say "Um ... no, I don't
think I can manage that" .... well developed sense of self-
preservation ..Makes me think of a pal from my appie days - we were
radio/rader in the local Navy ... and the moment anybody
discovered that one understood electronics, *everybody* had
a portable radio or summat that needs looking at (and at
that, often the "fault" was something *idiotic* like
batteries left long enough to leak acidic grunge all over
the inside of the radio) When asked "Can you look at my
radio", he would pick it up, look at it, say "Um yes, it's a
radio" and put it down .. having done *EXACTLY* what he was
asked to do - after a while people got the message and
stopped bugging him ...He was also one of those (*#!(^#!$(*&#!$^'ers who upon being
asked "Can you tell me the time" would look at his wrist and
simply say "yes" .. again, having answered the *EXACT*
question he was asked.Quoted message said:

Where is local?
Cape Town, S.Africa - where we have eleven, count 'em,
*ELEVEN* "official" languages ..... and Beav thinks I can't
find some slanguage in that lot to confuse him with ... Hah
I say .... *HAH* !!!!'course most of them are black-african, which means I
understand not much more than a smidgin of a couple of them
except for a few words here and there that have crept into
our local "English" .... which is nothing new after all -
"English" has been absorbing words from other languages for
centuries ...--

Interesting that "smidgin" is also a unit of measure there,
as well as NZ and here. Must be an antipodean thing.I learnt reallly quickly after I graduated from appies that
the officers got a better deal than the "other ranks" so I
went back to school to become an engineer. Then twenty years
later got promoted to driving cabs on the night shift in
Melbourne.I didn't know you guys had a navy. Who was the maritime
threat? Angola? Mozambique? Us?Cheers, Alan, T2 d&e, Australia.

Um .... I think it has a great deal to do with colonial
history - in that regards SA and Aus are pretty much alike
.... except that we didn't get convicts ... (and I
understand that today Aus people take pride in having a
convict in the family tree ??? - sort of proves that they've
been around for a long time ??)Quoted message said:

the SA Navy started life as the local RN offshoot, so
blame them, and in the second we have an rather long
coastline which DOES need some sort of floating force to
patrol it ....*Die = the *Rooi = Red *Gevaar = Danger
Loosely translated, "The Reds" .... who *did* provide a
great deal of support for many areas in Africa ... but I
doubt that had much to do with a naval presence - I think
it's really more to do with the simple fact of the length
of our coast, and the vast amount of shipping that comes
around the Cape .... and maybe a little serendipity in as
much as the infrastructure was just there when the RN moved
out in '57 ....--

One of my great several times grandfathers came out here
involuntarily from Ireland, as did many others. It didn't
take much to end up as a prisoner of his/her Majesty in
those days. It's more like we pride ourselves on what
we've built from such a base, and there's a certain pride
in the guts and spirit it took for the dregs of british
society to make a nation. I think I'd better stop with the
jingoism at that point before I get int strife. Flames
will be ignored :-)Quoted message said:
