See's. I don't know why! I guess when I think of the other three...I
think of them being sold in cheap drug stores like Payless and
Bartells. See's seems to only be sold in their own store and I
interpret that as better quality. Or perhaps that's my
misinterpretation :-)

And for what it's worth....I don't buy any of the above. Ever. When I
do buy chocolate, I buy chips for my daughter to bake cookies. I get
my dose of chocolate with my calcium. And if you have any interest,
it's such good chocolate calcium, that it satisfies my chocolate
craving. It's called Adora and has a website adoracalcium.com It
comes in milk chocolate or dark chocolate. After my thyroidectomy, I
had to take 4,000 mg of calcium a day for a couple of months. It was a
pleasure with these calciums. In fact, I have to be force myself not
to eat them as candy. They are nothing like those viactive ones.

Mervyn's of California (now history, I believe) here had a See's shoppe

Fannie Farmer standardized cooking measures so that, for example, a
measure of a "teacup" of flour or a spoonful of sugar in a recipe was
the same amount regardless of who made it so the outcomes would be the
same regardless of who made it. [censored] Farmer candies were pretty good
in the 1950s and 1960s; somewhere along the way, I think they morphed
into Fannie May shops. (OK, a little searching has both owned by the
same corporation).

amazing!

My choice would be See's. They have some good dark chocolates in
their inventory and their raspberry creams are very tasty.

What timing! I just polished off a Whitman's Sampler yesterday.
One that I bought for myself, isn't that pathetic? One time when I
was a kid, we all 4 got little Whitman's Aamplers, I don't know how
many candies were in there. I was in heaven. To this day, I get a
craving for a big Whitman's Sampler.

Following up to my own post… Thanks for all the kind responses, and to
answer the few who asked why the question...

We are (mostly) all foodies here, with expansive but often very selective
tastes that run far beyond what the average non-foodie might buy or even
know about.

Birthdays, Valentine's Day, Christmas, Easter, etc., seem to be the
occasions where most boxed chocolates are given and eaten, and it also
seems that most of these come from the companies I mentioned in my
question.

Apart from the brands of boxed candies that are commonly available in
drugstores, supermarkets, and other general retail establishments, some of
the brands are regionally distributed in their own branded shops; e.g.,
See's Candies and Ghirardelli in the West, Fannie Farmer/Fannie May in the
Midwest, etc. You can hardly consider New York City, as they have
*everything*. :

It wasn't until Godiva Chocolates began opening shops across the US in the
1970s that many people saw other brands as options.

I was merely curious as to what folks here would choose given specific
choices and so far it appears that See's Candies is the most popular
choice. Our family was equally divided between the Whitman's Sampler and
the Russell Stover Assortment.

Personally, I don't much care for general assortments, regardless of brand.
I'm not fond of creams or jellies, and prefer what might be categorized as
nuts, crisps, and chewies. Russell Stover and See's both have such
collections, as may others. Because I now live in AZ, if I need to buy an
assortment as a gift, I usually buy See's at one of their shops. It might
be what the average person would expect.

For myself, more often than not I would buy a specific candy such as almond
butter toffee or good quality plain dark chocolate, but those are not
assortments or collections.

I've never tried [censored] Farmer (nor even heard of them) so I can't
compare. Russell Stover and Whitman's....I don't care for the chocolate
coating nearly as much and more of their fillings are "ick" to me.
While there are a few See's fillings I don't care for, there are far
fewer than the other two brands.

I'm a nurse, and we're given boxes of chocolates by appreciative patients so
often that there is usually a box around the nurses' station most of the
time. See's is the favorite of nurses.

When my nephew was in High School and learning to set up his own web
page, he did a page called "favorite See's candy" and polled each family
member. It's nice to look there and buy someone a box with just their
favorites in it.
