They probably want the back roads open so that high-priority traffic can
still flow in the city. Otherwise, helicopters would be the only way to

Absurd. This has not been a season outside the bounds of observed data.

Now on the roadways. There are an estimated 3 million vehicles leaving the area. Giving each 25 feet of roadway makes for 14,000 miles of vehicles.

If each of the major highways were 8 lanes, that is still 1750 miles. Solid bumper touching bumper. With the 4 major evacuation routes, that means 438 miles of traffic. It is 210 miles to San Antonio, 225 to Dallas, 150 to Austin and 190 to Longview.

At these congestion patterns, speeds will definitely be under 5 MPH so that is why it is taking so long.

of the two following scenarios will happen:

1) The evacuation doesn't go too smoothly, and every Democrat in the
country will blame the POTUS personally - or -

the country will say that it proves that GWB only cares about "his
own" folks in Texas and not about the poor souls in Louisiana.

I would imagine both scripts are already written and ready to publish
to newspapers/blogs - it's just a matter of waiting to see which
