Cold & crisp today on the west coast of scotland, so was out for a very
pleasent 2 1/2 hour/40 mile ride. However, I don't think my toes have ever
been this cold, ever! 3 pairs of socks (1 thin, 2 thermal) & my neoprene
overshoes seemed to achieve nothing today.

Any miracle cures? It's 30 minutes after I got in now & I think I'm

ready to brave the shower without getting hot ache in my feet!

Buying a pair of Shimano W100 boots put paid to my cold toe miseries some
years ago. Combined with cheap, thick walking socks they have proved up to
the job in sub-zero temperatures on and off road, add Goretex socks and
they're up to the job in sub-zero temperatures with snow and/or lots of
water thrown in on 4 and 5 hour rides.
I thought a fox had snuck off with half the Goretex socks so went and bought
some Merino wool lined Sealskinz which I've yet to try as the Goretex sock
turned up behind the dryer, don't know where the other umpteen missing
half-pairs of socks are though ;-)

Conceivably your shoes were too tight with all the thick socks, restricting
    blood flow to feet..

Also, I assume your legs were adequately warm and insulated, not to mention
a warm hat on your head (seriously).

  4. I thought I might have got a bit excited with the sock selection this
morning. The rest of me was toasty (longs, bibshorts, 2 base layers, a vest
& a lycra top in flourescent colours to wake the drivers up, track mitts &
fleecy gloves & my woolie hat).

Probably sat in my laundry basket judging by the number of single socks
    in it.

I assume you had a good hat on? If you were wearing a helmet, then at the
least you need a ear warmer fleece thing, and maybe close up the vents
    as well.

Probably wasn't as cold in the Soft South (tm) but a recumbent with a
fairing which wraps round in front of the feet is the way to go, IMHO.
Still wearing the same socks as I was in the summer. (No, not the actual
    same pair...).

This seems like a good cue to mention what I've been working on this
evening. Just for fun, I've created a page about dressing for winter:
    <URL:http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/colyer_pictures/speedy5/cycling/dressforwinter.html>

I've been thinking about it for the last week or so.

Oh, BTW, this is not to be viewed by Helen Simmons.

I trust you've never tried going into a bank dressed like that!

If I wore that lot I would be saturated in sweat at anything above 10 below.

What a great page, well done. Glad to see some one else using the
newspaper trick, I haven't used it for years but it is always a great
standby plus if you do use it you have something to read at the cafe.

Out of interest have you weighed the clothes.

Go *into* a bank? Why would I want to do that? ;-)

Seriously, though, as soon as I get off the bike and I'm no longer
affected by wind chill I have to remove the mask, unzip the Gore-Tex and
    probably remove the hat(s).

At the sort of temperatures where I'll wear the whole lot, the wind
chill will be below -10C when I'm riding. Also, my commute is 5 miles
and mostly flat. For longer or hillier rides I'd wear slightly less.

I forgot to mention that if I sweat then the newspaper soaks it up
nicely. Perhaps I should add that.

I have a colleague who learnt long ago not to pick up any sheets of
newspaper that he finds on my desk in the winter :-)

No. But when I ride a 43lb bike, the weight of my clothes isn't really
    an issue.

There used to be a vagrants' newspaper ranking according to their
insulating qualities on a park bench. IIRC the broadsheets were
significantly above the tabloids. Perhaps we need a cyclists' ranking now.

Why not send it to the autofaq?

Perhaps I will. I think some rewording would be in order, to give some
advice on layering, remembering to keep the neck warm and tricks like
the newspaper, then a link to the above as an example of a winter
    layering system.

  20. Yup, Dorset is hilly. I did the Sustrans London to Cornwall (Eden Project)
ride this last September. It was all fine till we got to Dorset. Oh my
God!! by the time we got to Devon I was getting better on the hills, but
still, it all made me realize how flat London is! :-)
