  1. Hi, all.

I'm considering buying an ice cream maker. It's something I've always
wanted to try and hearing about various creamy desserts some of you
have made has convinced me to look into it. If any of you have any
recommendations for something under $100, I'd appreciate your advice.

    Thanks much,
    Ginny

Quick, it's only got a few minutes left!

My Cuisnart was under $100. It makes great ice cream. There are just a few
things that you have to be careful about. The freezer bucket should be in
the freezer a full two days before using it to freeze a batch. The custard
base should be prepared the day before, cooled and then refrigerated
overnight, and it doesn't her to pre cool it in an ice bath before going
    into the machine.

For under $100, you pretty much have to go with one of the frozen bowl
models, which sell for around $50. These are the ones that require you to
place the container in your freezer the night before. I like the Donvier,
which is not electronic. The fact that you have to turn the handle yourself
is no big deal, and actually gives you more control over the aeration level.
The Cuisinart model mentioned by another poster is pretty much ubiquitous
    and seems to be well-liked.

I think you have to pay around $150 to get the cheapest self-contained
model. These machines are more convenient in some respects, but I don't Know
if they cheapest model is any good.

I'm surprised nobody has bought one of those cube fridges for < $100 and
cobbled together an ice cream machine. You could technically crank the
temp below freezing in those babies. Reliability might be suspect though
as the compressor would be running pretty much constantly if you didn't
    insulate and seal well.
