  1. Tonight on the way home, I was stopped at traffic lights. When the lights changed, the driver of the white Mercedes behind me thought I was not taking off quickly enough, so he honked his horn and gave me some 'hurry up' gestures with his hand.

He then overtook me, but had to stop at the next traffic lights, with me behind him.

While he was stopped at the lights, he consulted his street directory, entirely missing that fact that the light had turned green.

I could not help myself. I rang my bell like a maniac, then when he looked up, I gestured for him to get going.

I was laughing. He gave another sort of gesture but then he smiled as he saw the joke.

Made me smile for the rest of the journey

  3. Ha, I like it!

  4. Must have been very tempting to ride past and thump on his roof!
    Showing great restraint there, Steve.

After many years of playing rugby and judo, I am pretty good at hitting things (including the ground) without getting hurt. I have been hit by a courier van while I was a pedestrian and I know what my reactions are in a slow speed vehicle/human collision. (I didn't suffer any injuries in that one despite being thrown into the air and hitting the road).

So....if some fool hits me in his car, I am going to roll over the bonnet, execute a perfect breakfall (judo term) in the middle of the bonnet (leaving a perfect large dent) then use my fore arm to put perfect dents in any other part of the car I slide past before I roll back off the car. Perhaps. (I prefer to think about this outcome rather than the less attractive alternatives)

They say it's good to have a plan in life. My cousin, SteveA, has one. So do I. Mine's a little more simple, however. I would simply ask the offending party to step out of their vehicle, then pummel their balls with my almighty fists of mass distraction.

I did Judo and ju-jitsu as well when I was at uni, knowing how to
breakfall is a good thing. But, what happens if you don't clip out in
    time?

I haven't actually tried it to see how much brute force is required to
yank my feet off the pedals without twisting (Look cleats), though I
imagine it wouldn't be tremendous. I do have scary thoughts about
being attached to the bike throughout a prang though.

My most serious stack on the bike was back in the days of cleats, toe clips and straps on the road. It involved a sweeping curve at the bottom of a hill, ball bearing gravel in the crux of the curve, the exuberance of youth, and the desire to show a couple of fast cyclists who I had hooked up with, that I was not only able to take my turn on the front, but that they would have to work hard to stay with me when I did.

Result: bike unrideable, knicks ripped, jersey torn, shoes scraped, helmet ground down on one side, right leg, hip, arm and shoulder looked like a cheese grater had been taken to 'em.

I was well attached to the pedals when I went down, but the body can do wonderous things in moments of terror and I was out of the pedals as I started to slide across the road horizontally.

I haven't had a big fall on clipless pedals, but I reckon I'd be out of them damn quick too.

When I had my only fast road accident, cornering, I fully detached from
my bike. I also did one hell of a breakfall and am not quite sure how I
pulled it off. I came off on my LHS and actually rolled onto my front as
I hit, and I crushed the tip of my helmet but did no facial damage
(although some might argue it could've been an improvment...)

It's always more interesting on the MTB. On my MTB I have:

    (1) Landed on my back, still clipped in, holding my bike up in the air
above me, because if I dropped it, it was going over the edge and it was
    a looooong way down, and

    (2) Landed on my back, on a rock, still clipped in, stuck like a
    tortoise, but uninjured.
