  1. ....said his career might eventually lead him to try to win the Tour de
France. "Who knows"? Peter Hespel, his trainer, published details of
Boonen's training recently. In one test he started riding at a power
output of 100 watts, increasing by 40 watts every eight minutes, all at
a pedal rate of 90rpm. After 90 minutes of steadily increasing effort
Boonen rode for eight minutes at 450 watts, and that was after riding
    eight minutes at 420 watts.

So that's 16 minutes at an average of 440 watts, which would indicate
that Boonen's anaerobic threshold power output, the pace at which he
could ride a long time trial or climb a mountain, is in the ballpark of
that of many top riders in big race stages.

The biggest limiting factor to Boonen's stage race potential is his
weight, which is getting close to 175lbs. But Eddy Merckx had to lose
weight to move from a classics star to a tour winner, so did Lance. And
what of Miguel Indurain? He lost weight and came from almost nowhere to
    win 5 Tours.

Boonen would also have to increase his anaerobic threshold power output
a little, but that is achievable with specific training, and it is
    something he already thought about.

Before last year's tour they asked Boonen if he had any thoughts on
taking the yellow jersey by doing a good prologue time trial and using
his sprint to take it in the early stages.

He admitted that he had thought about it, and that he thought he had it
in him to do a good time trial, but had dismissed the idea because he
would have had to sacrifice his sprint.

If he can take enough EPO to boost his 38ish hematocrit up to 50 I bet
    he'd be a contender.

  5. What was Indurain's hematocrit? Or Lance's?

I don't think there were any limits for it when Indurain raced... but
here is a little blurb about the guy who beat him:

"Riis was otherwise known as Mr. 60%, a suggestion that he has used
performance enhancing drugs. The 60% is an allusion to a high
hematocrit (red blood cell) level, an indication of EPO usage. It has
been published that Riis had a hematocrit level of 56% during one test
in July 1995; Well above typical natural levels, as well as his
published reading of 41% in the offseason earlier that year"

So ya... Boonan needs to get those numbers up...

As I recall, in Cole's book on Lance he states that the whole team was
right at 50% (the allowable limit) before the Tour...

I don't usually have cereal for breakfast. But chew on the attachment over
    your morning coffee.

  9. Is the only way to get those levels up to take dope? In that case
Boonen, I hope, will remain a classics guy.

Thanks for the info on the numbers, it's very revealing. And sad too
that all those racers had to dope to win the Tour.

  11. Idiots assumed that Mr. 60% was Riis. In fact is was someone else. Have you
EVER met Riis? I saw him in the Tour of California with the CSC boys and he
still looks like he could be a contender in the Tour.

  12. HEY EVERYBODY - IN 40 YEARS AND HUNDREDS OF RACES WITH THOUSANDS OF RACERS,
BRIAN'S DISCOVERED THAT SOME PEOPLE CHEAT!!!!

I suppose that certainly support his implication that everyone cheats. Maybe
    that's why he was divorced.

"Do you remember the baffling act of Bjarne Riis in the climb of Hautacam in
the Tour of 1996? The futur Tour-winner had litterally mocked his rivals
before he just "forgot"" them. And since the usual hemotacrite level of his
rivals was about 54 % (...) I understood the appeal of his nickname in the
    peloton: ""Mister 60 %"

    - [censored] Voet, Massacre à la chaîne, pp. 164-65

Apparently the whole peloton was consisted of idiots. Not impossible, of
    course.

Actually, I don't think a high hematocrit is a necessity... but it
seems to help. It would surely help him in the classics as well. I was
happy to hear that he was testing so low... and still crushing the
    competition.

I do, but it's on a computer that is no longer in use. The names read like a
who's who of cycling's elite over the years.
