Ha! If it's any consolation, I'd planned a walk today but didn't bother
because it was overcast all day...

....and now the sun's come out and there isn't a cloud in the sky! :-(

Had two very short bimbles in South Wales; last Sunday, Blorenge and
Tuesday, Mynydd y Lan, both times the weather was glorious!

After driving for about 3 and a half hours there was no way I wasn't
going to do at least the first half of the walk.

Except for the last few miles the sun was shining all the way across
Wales. If I had had maps and an itinerary for anywhere close by I would
have diverted but of course I left the books at home and was a bit short
on maps as well having only taken a laminated A4 blown up to 1:25000 as
I didn't have any large scale mapping of the area.

Somewhere where it is wet, even for North Wales, plus a quarry expansion
that isn't as yet marked on the map (AFAIK). The expanding quarry has
actually been mentioned here in the past as about to gobble up a minor
summit. I just hadn't connected that report with my intended walk which,
for once, was culled from a guidebook:-)

That's the one. I have just had a look at get-a-map and the extended
quarry is marked there. I actually descended some way into the quarry
before I chickened out and retreated.

Faced with the dilemma of how to get round a working quarry in mist when
I had no idea of the current size I chose to outflank it to the West so
that if I did fail to get to Manod Mawr I was well positioned to get
back to my car (and to the East would have been off the edge of my A4
map anyway). Looking at get-a-map if it had been clear I might have
tried the Eastern side but the preferred route would still have involved
trespassing in the quarry at the point the open access boundary necks
down to a couple of hundred yards wide. The footpath which approaches
the opposite side of the neck ceases to be a PROW at the boundary and it
is not clear which of the tracks are public roads. That some of them
should be is the only explanation for the seemingly idiotic isolated
short length of PROW nearby.
