  1. After 5 years and 3 months of posting to this newsgroup, I've finally
accepted that I'm a hopeless addict and it's ruining my life. I've
tried many times to cut down on my postings but to no avail. Like all
true addicts therefore, I figure the only solution is to quit
    completely.

I've been tying up loose ends over the last few days and I've set the
deadline for midnight tonight. I'm not only going to stop posting but
I'm not going to lurk either. Full on cold turkey. It's the only way.
On August 1st 2004 I plan to begin a new life. What will I do with all
    that spare time?

If anyone wants to contact me or continue any newsgroup discussion just
    email me.

Of course, there may be many here who don't believe that I can do this,
including myself! But I'm going to try... :-)

I don't intend to give up the group permanently, I'd like to pop in and
make occasional posts in future, but I just don't seem to be capabable
of that right now, the addiction is too strong. So I need to take a
holiday. Maybe later I'll be able to return and post normally. Or not.
Who knows? But for now I just need to quit completely.

Look out for website updates in the near future, like the Expedition 15
page for example, I have plenty more photos to add. I figure if I quit
this newsgroup I may actually find the time to work on my website
instead. Oh, and don't go having any expeditions without me! ;-)

With less than an hour left, nostalgia has prompted me to look back at
what started it all. My very first post was on the 5th of May 1999. It
may come as no surprise to note that my first post was entitled "What is
a mountain?", which sparked off 239 replies.

You may be interested to take a look at this thread, if only to scan the
list of posters' names. Many current regulars feature, complete
strangers to me at the time, but long term contributors to this group.
Also many other past regulars feature who've since completely
    disappeared.

My third post, two days later, was "GPS inaccuracy", when I was a mere
newbie asking a naive question about these devices, about which I knew
nothing then. Who could guess at the time what that would lead to? :-)

Anyway, goodbye for a while, I may be gone for some time...

    Ta-ra Paul.

I, too, am spending too much time on this group. So far I have
managed to give it up for approximately 3 hours 47 minutes.

See you at Exped 16 ...... whenever/wherever that is.

It's no good you know, You'll come back in the end as there is simply
no known cure. The best way to cut down is to buy a new house - this
completely ***** up your routine. If that fails, find a partner with
two young kids. Everytime I go on the computer now I am reminded that
the grass needs cutting. Anyway, you'll not read this so I'm off to
    bed.

    Graham

PS, I'm sure you'll have a quick lurk, so why not set some rules up
that enable you to cut back on posts? Rule 1 could be : do not reply
if the original post contains the consecutive letters g, p and s. I
myself will not reply to anything that contains the words *the OS are
theiving abstrads who make inferior maps to Harveys* [1]

[1] .....however, I've been away for a week so I'm just going to have
    a look at Peewiglet's post.

    Amen, Amen, Amen!

WTF would walkers be without the OS?

We'd be using 1:47,373 maps in blue.

  11. If anyone doubts Paul's addiction, check out the scary number of posts he's
made in the middle of the night!

Let's hope his cold turkey spell will help him get more sleep!

    Cheers, Jiffy

It's the only time he has left. He goes out, goes for a walk (7 hours)
takes a photograph (7 hours) then comes back and writes a thesis on
GPS which he posts here (9 hours), then goes to sleep (1 hour). No
    wonder he's knackered.

Has it escaped everyone's attention that the Silly Season officially begins
on August 1st ? Perhaps Paul is having us on. If not, I wish him well.

    Just maybe... he's gone walking.
