I've observed the same thing... there aren't nearly as many fat people on
the west coast as there are in midwest/northeastern states.

until moving to Michigan. And when I moved here I very noticibly recognized
that a much higher percentage of people were obese than where I had
previously lived. In my own mind, I thought it made since... WA is
beautiful and has trees and rivers and mountains and fantastic weather... MI
is dreary, cloudy, humid, sticky, hot, freezing-burning, brown, ugly,
cemented... my lifestyle changed to stay indoors more because the outside
was not very pretty.
Also, the fresh produce on the west coast was much yummier. The apples,
oranges, veggies, fish... fresh and delicious. I hated the taste of most
fruits & veggies when I first moved here (they ship them up from Florida -
yuck - instead of California).

Where are you at in the Midwest?
I live in Kansas and yes one full isle is full of pizza.
When we order pizza say from Pizza Hut, I have started scraping off the tops
and just eating the cheese and meat.
I don't think I would do that from a store bought pizza though I don't think
the cheese is always real.

the grocery stores there would be *Entire Aisles* of nothing but pizza.

Yes, there is a lot of pizza in freezers in the stores I go to also. I don't go
down that isle any longer. Its too damn tempting.

Here in Chicago, the grocery chains (Jewel, Dominicks, Cub, Meijer) have
almost entire aisles of frozen pizza. One of them (I think Dominicks)
started carrying a frozen low carb pizza made by Home Run Inn (I didn't like
it).

There is no shortage of well-fed people around here.

I don't eat the pizza at all.

I do feel surrounded by Pizza, and many other really carb concentrated
foods of the conveninence or junk variety.

Just as the dead haunt the kid in the movie The Sixth Sense,
I find I'm startled by all the pizzas I see everywhere. I
used to only notice just the simple Margherita and feel
like a friend had appeared. Now, it is like a freak show.

I live in San Antonio - we were recently the "fattest" city in America - but
I am working hard to help us get past this label. I think it is because we
have so much mexican food here - lots of carbs there. I love mexican food
though. Excellent homemeade tortillas - even on LC - I have to have a
homemade tortilla every now and then.

I do not consider pizza to be junk food.

It is more of a staple in these parts. A lot of people have pizza and a
movie once a week, especially in the winter. When it is below zero
temperatures most people don't want to go out. However, I make a nice
crustless pizza casserole now and the crust isn't missed.

I avoid the freezer section with ice cream and the cereal aisle. Renting an
apartment with a failing freezer also helps a great deal - no ice cream, no
frozen dinner. May be I like it so much that I still haven't talked to my
landlord about it 1.5 years after moving in.

EAT PIZZA THEN (Say once a month, and that be your ONLY splurge). I eat
whatever (I don't gorge myself & never do desserts (sugar) for one meal 1-2
times a month, and I have been consistltly losing weight for 8 months now
(total of 45 pounds). It's realistic and as long as you can go right back
to LC like I can, it should not be a problem.
