  1. Hello group:

I previously asked about a heel pain a few weeks back and received a few
replies that it might be plantar facitius. Yesterday I finally visited a
sports med doc and found out that I officially do have plantar facitius. He
gave me some stretching exercises to do, along with some anti-inflam meds
and some inserts for my shoes. He also gave me a splint to wear at night.
The bad news is that he told me definitely no running, and that it was a
slow process in healing. I haven't ran in about 10 days to see if the
"rest" would prevent me from going to the doc, but I finally gave in and had
to go. I was already missing my runs, now it looks like I will miss them
any longer. Besides lifting weights, anybody got any recommendations for
exercise that won't cause any further damage? Would riding a bike be ok?
Thanks in advance for any encouragement.

did you do all those? especially the stretching and night time sling?
now you need to wait. it's winter. where do you want to run
anyway? It might take months to get better. You can
only delay the repair by running now.

Doing some aerobic work will probably help you get back into it faster, when
    you do start up again.

A good rule of thumb is, if it hurts, don't do it. Most non-impact aerobic
    exercise should be fine.

Agreed and the bike should be ok unless is causes any discomfort. I
would restrict yourself to staying in the seat while pedaling. Standing
on the pedals will cause pressure on the arch and slow the healing.
    Swimming, elliptical trainer, yoga.

I'm sure your primary concern is recovering and getting back to running.
While you are down for the count I would hope you also focus on what
caused the PF in the first place. Check out
http://www.drpribut.com/sports/heelhtm.htm There is lots of good info
on the injury in general to include ascertaining cause..

    -DougF

  9. Terry,
I also suffer from PF. I have tried most of the recommend cures (no
night splint yet - that is coming) and I just keep recurring. The most
effective treatment was hiking in Switzerland - lots of walking uphill,
flatfooted. This provided the perfect stretch and cleared the
condition, just to have it recur once I started running again.
Cycling seems fine, sitting, while standing, whatever you want. Good
cycling shoes with good foot beds.
For running, I tape my arches. I like Johnson coach tape, it is
ventilated, sticks well, peels off well and is flexible. I tape a
single width of tape around the arch, two times around. I place my heel
on a soup can (the same soup can I use to massage the underside of my
foot) so that the foot is flexed when I tape it. I do not crank the
tape to make it tight, when you stand and load the foot it is plenty
tight. The tape helps to support the arch and I can run all I want.
Because I run in the woods and do a lot of cutting left and right and
hurtle down hills I sometimes get little blisters from the tape. In
time I have found ways to avoid this and recover from it, I would be
    happy to explain the methods.
This works for me. A doctor did not recommend it (nor did a doctor
recommend against it). It may not work for you. This is a far simpler
method of taping than the descriptions you will find on the internet
    and seems to be effective.

  10. Ahh, plantar facitius............the official ailment of mama's boys.

  11. The link below is an excellent resource for sports injury and even more
importantly recovery exercises and how to know when you're ready to go
    back.

Trust me patience is worth every bit as a treatment. Put off any plans
you have for at least 3 months and let your body heal. PF is a hard
injury to shake and many runners I know have re-occurances because they
returned to high mileage too fast.

    Hi Andy:

Thanks very much for the link and the advice. I certainly increased my
mileage quite a bit and am assuming that's why the injury occured.

    Hello:

Yes, I've been doing them all....and even only after a couple of days, it
feels much better. I'm in Virginia, and although we have cold winters, it's
usually not until January that it becomes to cold to run. And even then we
can still have some very nice days. I agree that the more I run now, the
longer I will prolong the healing, which will only cause more pain and
    setback. Thanks for the reply.

    Doug:

Thanks for the link.....very informative. I can only assume that it
happened because of an increase in mileage. I've always ran: playing some
type of sport, but mainly short distances if I ran to run. Usually 2-4
miles at the most. However, while training for a 1/2 marathon, I increased
it dramatically instead of gradually. And I usually run on a trail that is
    very hilly. Thanks very much.
