  1. I finally got a decent ISP connection. DSL at 1.5M/s. But, it comes
with few extras, email being the only one. So, I need a recommendation
for a good usenet (newsgroups) provider. I know it will cost extra, but
    that's ok. I'll tolerate $5mo. Any suggestions?

BTW, I love that my ISP is MSN and I'm running Linux on it! 😉 (no,
this post is from my soon to be ex-ISP)

If you don't have to have binaries go with the German server. It's only 13
    bucks a year. It's news.individual.net

Been using this service for about 3 years - no complaints... paid
US$5.00 (so far - to buy a few gigs of "downloads"😉, you can top-up as
    you wish...
They have servers in USA and Europe as far as I know..
They carry the binary groups too.

I've been happily using Newsguy for my usenet, email and web-hosting needs
for many years now. And their most basic service is 5.95$ per month.

They're out of California, if that makes any difference.

2 GB a month of Giganews is $8 a month (up from $5 when I looked
last). I'm doing very nicely on it (provided free by comcast). I can
read afb all I want. I only got into trouble when I found some news
groups that had beatuiful garden pictures, cute little icons and other
frills I didn't really need. Anyway, I got a warning about being near
my limit after less than a week of reading those binaries at the
beginning of a month. I stopped and finished out the month with no
other limit warnings. Lesson learned: I can survive on usenet with a
    limited account.

    Why can't you keep MSN?

I've read here that these are pretty good too.
http://www.teranews.com/ (50 megabytes per day for $29.95 per year)
    http://www.newsguy.com/ (Basic / 1 Month / 3 GB Monthly / $5.95)

AFAIC "retention" isn't high on my want list. I absolutely hate it
when a new news group's TOC goes back literally years. I'd be happy
with a week at most. If I search for an article, I use google
(dejanews); I don't download a bazillion headers just to find one.

    I have used 100proofnews/AccessUsenet (http://www.100proofnews.com for
month-to-month, http://www.accessusenet.com for monthly and discounted
periods of 3 or more months) for about 3 years and have been happy enough
with the price/performance. They have good group coverage and retention and
they're pricing was better than their competition, though there have been
occasional outages that take them a while to correct; not many, but a couple
of longish ones in 3 years. OTH, newsgroups are not a MUST HAVE for me, so
I willingly traded off occasional inconvenience for the cost savings.
Overall, I am happy with the price/performance of my choice.

I can and will. MSN IS my new dsl isp. They told me when I first
signed up I absolutely had to use M$ Windows, that they didn't support
Linux. HA! No isp supports Linux. But, most support ppl have no idea
about networking and protocols, only how to read the Windows
setup-scripts. I wangled the info I needed and did it myself.

I agree 😉 The German usenet server is nice. I've used it for years,
although I wasn't as happy when it went to a fee-based usenet provider.
The yearly rate of approximately $13 is very reasonable, though. One
nice thing about individual.net - if it's not binary, then they'll be
happy to subscribe to nearly any newsgroup when requested if it's not
    already listed.

When there was discussion here about recommended free usenet servers,
    here's one that was listed -- nntp.aioe.org -- however I've noticed its
retention of posts is not long.

Heh, get you riled up enough and you do it yourself huh? Maybe you
can find a job as the Linux support person at an ISP. The best jobs

Let me third this recommendation of news.individual.net. I've been with
them for a few years, like you going back to when they were a freebie.
I have nothing but good to say about them.

    Also, for anyone considering them:

It is, but it's fine for my limited Usenet posting. I also use Teranews, a

individual.news.net. ~$15/year last time I had it (I no longer use it).
    Reliable. No binaries, though.

So, I need a recommendation for a good usenet (newsgroups) provider.

    Consider the following:

    <http://news.individual.net/> costs EUR 10 (about $14) a year for
text-only newsgroups. It is probably the best-maintained newsserver of
    them all.

    or

<http://newsguy.com/> cheapest account is $39.95 a year for all
newsgroups, including binary ones, with a 3 GB a month download limit
(any unused bandwidth is retained for your use and can be used in
perpetuity). Includes two mailboxes and 30 MB Web space.

ObFood: Onion pudding from _Simple French Food_ by Richard Olney.

    Victor

    Onion pudding

1 pound sweet onions, halved, finely sliced
    2 tablespoons butter
    2 eggs
    Salt, pepper
    2/3 cup milk
    1/4 cup flour
Butter (about 1 tablespoon for the gratin dish)

Stew the onions gently in butter for about 1/2 hour without letting them
color. Add the eggs, seasonings, and milk to the flour, whisk until
smooth, and stir in the onions (slowly if they are still hot). Pour
into a liberally buttered gratin dish and bake in a hot (450°F) oven for
from 20 to 25 minutes or until swelled up and well browned.

This looks like a good deal, considering I also have no freebie web
space with my dsl. I'll check into it. That onion pudding recipe looks
intriguing, also. I learned from one of the Burt Wolfe episodes that
until the discovery of sugar cane in the New World, other than honey,
onions were the primary source of sweet in the Old World. I've been
cooking with them more and more, lately, and rediscovering their special
attributes. Thanks for both the tip and the recipe.

If you do, keep in mind that the $39.95-a-year "Basic Newsguy" rate
isn't listed on their Web site (it shows a monthly rate which adds up to
a lot more). You will have to e-mail them at <[email hidden]> and
    request the yearly rate.

    That onion pudding recipe looks

Here is another nice onion recipe - onion gratin - from _Simple French
    Food_ by Richard Olney.

    Victor

    Onion Gratin
    Gratin d'oignons
    (for 3 or 4)

1 pound walnut-sized onions (white spring onions, "silverskins", etc. -
or, lacking those, large sweet onions, thickly sliced or coarsely
    chopped), peeled
    Salt, pepper
    Nutmeg
    About 3/4 cup heavy cream
    Butter (for gratin dish)

Parboil the onions in well-salted simmering water, counting about 5
minutes from the time the water returns to the boiling point for tender
spring onions or up to 10 minutes for certain winter onions - the flesh
should be limp but not soft. Drain well and pour them into a buttered
gratin dish large enough to put them in a single layer. Salt lightly
and grind over pepper to taste. Stir a tiny bit of freshly grated
nutmeg into the cream and pour it evenly over the onions, just to cover.
Bake in a 350°F oven for about 45 to 50 minutes.
