We like Bob. When he is on, we sit there and wave our hands around
because he cracks us up the way he waves HIS hands around. The motions
don't seem to have any relationship at all to what he is saying. Very
strange and amusing.

I think Bob Roll probably knows more about pro cycling than Phil or Paul,
but he's determined to be such a comedian that he rarely imparts his
knowledge. (Similarly, Carmichael probably knows more than Phil or Paul,
but he's so damned stiff and awkward he can't communicate what he knows.) I
think many folks have forgotten ( or never knew ) that Bob Roll played a
pivotal role in helping spur Lance Armstrong's comeback and, while you won't
hear much about that from Bob himself, I think that, plus his relationship
with Lance, factors heavily into why he's still around.

I think the reason Bob and Chris are part of the OLN time is because they
definitely bring different assets to the table as far as cycling is
concerned. That's a good thing as it has breath to the coverage. Very wise
on OLN's part, IMO. I'd like to see Bob paired with Phil and Chris paired
with Paul. It's that other guy they should get rid of.

I was kinda put off how OLN would switch back to P&P at the end of a stage
in the evening expanded coverage of the tour. I enjoyed listening to two
different sets of commentators for the same stage.

Bob Roll isn't bad at all. It's unfortunate that OLN has him as the
comic relief during the Tour. However, when he does commentary during
the Giro or other smaller races, he is usually very informative and
pleasant to listen.

training questions, he doesn't seem to know what the fans or viewers would
like to hear.

Or maybe he just can't judge the level of technical jargon he should use so
he doesn't initiate commentary. He does give the impression that he knows
so much that he can't pick any one thing to talk about except Lance's
wattages, heh.

If you listen to Roll during serious part of the race commentary, he does a
very well-informed and smoothly delivered turn, especially as exciting
events unfold in front of him. Though you wouldn't want four of him, it's
fun to hear his joking now and then, imo.

We also need to remember that Bob Roll *has* credentials. He's been there,
as a member of many Tour de France teams. It's not like he's a sidekick
that hasn't been there. The problem is that Neandrethal thing he has going
on. Looks more like something you'd see in a textbook depiction of the
missing link. But he is a very intelligent (and very funny, especially in
person) guy. And a very nice guy, which counts for something too.

IMO Bob Roll has gone from being a quirky, sometimes insightful, ex-rider to
a big joke. He seems more interested in developing his on-air personality
that giving entertaining information. He has become like so many broadcast
people - a caricature.

Carmichael seems to have no knowledge base whatsoever. His comments
sound more like something from a cosmopolitan magazine. Based on his
resume, maybe he is qualified to work at Jamba Juice.
The only reason he is invited is because he is lance's buddy.
He won't be back next year.

If you think Carmichael is stiff and awkward now, you should have heard
him 10 years ago. His public speaking ability has improved with time.

At first I listened to Chris Carmichael to hear good stuff about
physiology, biochemistry, training, eating, tactics, strategy,
husbanding resources, ...

Nothing. Now I fast forward over him.

I conclude that he is tight with a nickel and would never
knowingly give away _anything_.
