OK, it was only for a distance of 100 metres and it was my
wife's bike with step-through frame and saddle set to its
lowest. But, for the first time since 1st December, I HAVE
RIDDEN A BIKE. I am absolutely chuffed to bits.
I'll also concede that it hurt a bit but am not going to let
that stop me from doing a little bike shopping.

you can check it over before paying. I've had two iffy
experiences with mail order bikes, one of them a Thorn.

Excellent news - congratulations! Does this mean that the
arm is now working to some extent, or was it a completely
one-handed effort.

I have bought stuff from SJSC via my LBS ie. they act as a
wholesaler. That way I get the product I want and my LBS
gets the business. Paul.

all is not lost as I will sail over to the Island and be a
spectator.

Yes, it does look a bit rosier. The nerve conductivity man
reckoned I've damaged the nerves between my neck and a
couple of key shoulder muscles. It should get better in time
but I didn't like the way he said "it's good news; you
probably get 80% or 90% back in a year or so".
I'll just see how it goes.

Once I'd leaned forward and allowed my hand to fall into
place I was able to grip the bars OK. I wouldn't claim much
steering was done by the left hand, though. OTOH it was a
bit more than purely one handed.

I'll be crewing on the old man's boat for the third year
running -- one day we'll get organised and win a halfway-
decent placing.

A sailor in as far as owning a boat with sails. Not even
back in the water yet as climbing ladders has been a bit
tricky and I've only just admitted defeat and sub-contracted
all the winter jobs to the boatyard.
If they [censored] up and I'm not out on the water next weekend
I'll be mightily peed off.
I won't be Round the Islanding (by boat) this year as I'm
simply not fit enough for anything serious. I think my
sailing will consist entirely of short hops to pubs in fine
weather only. But it beats being stuck indoors.

My boat (*) has been in the garage since we got to Dundee.
It is full of all the usual suburban garage effluvia.. the
bike rack for the car, shredder, old desks, bits of bikes
and so on.
In need of a repaint and some decent buoyancy so some time
when I get a round tuit (tm) it will get back on the water.

(*) Wensum sailing dinghy sail number 525. It fits the
description of most amateur boats as 'a hole in the water
into which you pour money'. Still, it was quite useful for
shifting all the goods and chattels when we moved.

I understand why you are disappointed but I think that is
good news. Certainly when contrasted with what it might have
been. If you keep working on it you may even be able to
improve on the consultant's "probably".
