Attended a spinning class today. Was very glad I didn't have lunch beforehand. The instructor is
active with both mountain biking and roadie stuff. She chose great music and came up with enough
scenarios to keep me engaged.
Spinning classes are included in my Y membership, so it's effectively free to me. It's not as fun as
actually being on my bike, but it's infinitely better than working a treadmill or a stationary bike
on my own. I can't make it through half an hour on those; I had no problem staying motivated through
an hour-long session of spinning.
Spinning has two main benefits to me. One, there are plenty of days when I'm not motivated enough to
go biking in the cold, let alone the dark cold -- but even on days when I'm feeling like a slug,
having an instructor egging me on gets me going. Two, I can focus purely on wringing the most energy
out of my legs, so that when I do bike for real, my legs will be in better shape and I will be able
to focus more on the obstacles rather than on not collapsing.
If you don't care for spinning, I can understand. But I think it will fill a niche for me. It will
never be something I choose to do instead of mountain biking, but it will be something I do in
addition to mountain biking, and I do think it will help me enjoy mountain biking more.
