I'm not sure of the origin but I've heard it all my life and I'm not
from the bible belt. Try Googling "preacher cuss". Extremely common.
The English language is so rich with these kinds of aphorisms.

One of my favorites that I never heard up north but have heard many
times in the midwest is, "It all depends whose ox is in the ditch".
