The contact point is very small and most MTB shoes are too
flexy - imagine standing on a 2cm diameter post for 4 hours
without being able to change where the post is. For commuting
etc they're fine, but for a long (2hrs+) ride, they sucketh with
vim and vigour.pressure = force/area, remember? ๐
I'd suggest you bite the bullet and get some road shoes & good
road pedals. It won't take long to get used to, and you'll be
way more comfortable. I found adapting to SPD-SLs after a
year on SPDs was a doddle. The SPD-SL cleats are ok for
walking in too - I've had a number of occasions where
I've had to walk more than 1km in them, and they weren't
-too- bad to walk in.
I use carbon fibre soled shoes for the above reason, mountain bike shoes
flex too much. I recently bought some new Shimano shoes and discovered
the Shimano mountain bike clips won't fit on the road shoes, so I had to
change the pedals on my road bikes.
