i think you have a bad set. i have 3500+ miles on mine and only trued them once and that was after the first ride to re-tension them.

I've got 1200 miles on my set and they are still true. I've ridden some rugged roads, too, so hard that I rotated my handlebars once. That was scary. If the wheels were crappy I would be out of true by now. Sounds like you may have gotten a set that was not properly trued or something. I doubt they came like that from the factory.

What do you weigh? Most "designed" wheels are not suited for riders over 85 kg´s, some even less like most American Classic wheels.

sometimes spokes can be overtensioned. in such cases, even minor jolts can lead to warping and spoke breakage. if you pluck them, do they sound exceedingly high pitched? do they all sound about the same pitch, or some sound high and others low. yes, on the rare occassion, they can come from the factory that way. usually a good bike mechanic at your lbs would catch it, but they're only human also.

if you've been replacing the spokes and truing the wheels yourself, the spokes very possibly aren't tensioned properly. i'd say it's an art, not a science. maybe try to detension them first and go slowly, keeping them all sounding about the same. chances are you might want to have a pro finish them off.

if you bought the bike from your lbs and had big problems immediately, maybe try another shop

are they really the elites? from the problems you describe, they sound more like the sl model. by wheel standards, the elites are not really expensive, and I've not heard of problems with them, but lots of folk have trouble with the sls.

I have mine more than 5000miles and still true as the first time I used it back in Jan '04.

Believe most of us know that no wheel lasts forever, even Mavic's. Without knowing whether you got the wheels new from an LBS, or "like new" off ebay, what you weigh, how many miles you've ridden on what kind of roads, or how many potholes or rough railroad tracks you've hammered over....there's no way anyone can make a judgement about the durability of the wheels.

i go up and down grassy hills, bumpy roads, mine are straight at an arrow. never had any problems with them.

I've done 3800 miles on mine. Had the back adjusted at 2000 miles and they've been perfect ever since. Some of the roads Ive ridden on have been in bits. I weigh 91 kg. they were recommended to me because of their strength. you seem to have just been unlucky.

I've got a set of elites with 20,000 k's that are still straight and true, a pair of open pros with double that that I have just had rebuilt (after more than 10 years and the nipples had failed) and a pair of Mavic something or others on my MTB that have had a hiding and I couldn't be more happy. Sounds like you got a lemon.

After a couple hundred miles on the elites that came with my 2005 'dale R1000 back in March, the rear started going out of true every 10mi. Always in the same spot and to the point of rubbing the brake after those 10mi...

After fighting with the LBS for about a week they warranty replaced it for me (not sure if they got Cannondale or Mavic to pony up).

Fast forward 3 months and another 700mi or so. The new rear rubs within 20mi of the last true...

Going to talk to them this weekend about replacing it with an 32-hole Ultegra hub laced 3-cross to a Mavic Open-Pro rim...

Full Disclosure Statement: I'm 240lbs, but I specifically asked when I bought the bike and again when they replaced the first rear "Is this wheel up to a rider of my size using it?" and both times the LBS answered "Yes. Absolutely no problem."

My Mavic Carbone SL's cracked when I hit a nasty pothole when I was out training and it started to rain. For most part they are really good wheels-- a bit expensive, but good for long-term training/racing.
