Tories in school run 'crackdown'
The Conservatives are planning to crack down on parents unnecessarily
using their cars for the school run, the BBC has learnt.
Tory leader David Cameron is expected to tell a local election campaign
event that more needs to be done to encourage people to walk or cycle.
The move is one of a number of policies on environmental issues
announced during the run-up to next month's poll.
Labour has accused Mr Cameron of "flip-flopping" on green issues.
Cameron's record
Short journeys are a major contributor to carbon emissions, and senior
party sources say "ideas are coming" to deal with the school run in
particular.
Among other announcements, it is thought Mr Cameron will promise new
measures to improve public transport.
The Tory leader has made "vote blue, go green" the party's slogan for
the elections, which take place on 4 May.
Environment Secretary Margaret Beckett said Mr Cameron had voted against
government bills that aimed at tackling environmental problems.
And the Liberal Democrats accused Mr Cameron of "global posturing" over
the issue.
