One liter is just over 32 oz. I would not call that very close.
The Kaiser Pass is ~9150 ft., and the ride starts at ~350 ft. I had spent the two prior days at altitude, riding the pass both days without any discomfort, so I don't think altitude was the problem. I reached Kaiser Pass at 6.5 hours and felt fine, but 30 minutes later I was in trouble.
You're probably right then. It's not an altitude adjustment even with the heftly delta V if you had acclimated to it already. --Don-- The beatings will continue until morale improves.

"fluid ounce" is a measure of volume. One fluid ounce of a given fluid will not weigh as much (measured in grams, ounces, pounds, whatever) as one fluid ounce of another.
128 fluid ounces == 1 gallon. One fluid ounce of water probably does weigh more than an ounce. It's too late tonight for me to calculate. -- Rick Onanian

That's a *lot* of water.
I agree. That's more than 3/4 gallon per hour. On a long ride, I might drink 1/5 that amount (between 1 and 2 pints per hour, depending on weather).
Playing tennis against a backboard at noon in the middle of summer I lost 2 pounds (or 32 ounces or 1 quart) of water per hour. I was working harder then than I've ever worked on a bicycle.
