  1. I'm a 57 yr. old male. I was shoveling snow. Bottom line: I slipped badly on the ice about 8 hours
ago. I went up and then landed hard on my left hip.

I'm in a lot of pain.

However, I can walk (slightly gingerely, but pretty good). I assume since I can walk okay and I am
in pain but not excruciating that I haven't broken my hip (I am hesitant to go to the ER-- it's
expensive and I really don't want to be hanging around there for 5 hours!).

Assuming it is "just" a badly bruised hip and not broken, how do I take care of it?? I tried ice for
a bit. I am also trying a hot-pak (and that seems to work better).

    Any suggestions???

    Mel

You should go to the ER. You might have broken your hip.

    Bad assumption. No merit whatsoever.

Understood, and maybe it is just a bruise, but if you're wrong, it's just going to get worse and
more expensive the longer you wait.

If you're in as much pain as you say, there's a good chance it's more than just a bruise.

OK, you guys talked me into it!! The pain continued so I ended up in the ER room at 12:30 AM.

Fortunately, my hip is fine. However, the x-rays MAY be (but is probably not) showing a broken
pelvis. The doctor wasn't 100% sure so the radiologist will let me know tomorrow. I definitely have
    a bruised hip.

Regardless, it is not considered serious, only very painful. The doctor said if it is broken it will
just be painful longer but they don't have to do anything

Heh.... That's when everyone ends up in the ER. It's a law of the universe that everyone waits until
after midnight... on a weekend or holiday if at all possible.

But seriously, glad to hear it's not serious. Next time do yourself a favor and visit the doc during
office hours. It's cheaper, and the magazines in the waiting room are better! ;-)

Good news. I have seen hip fractures where the femoral neck impacts on itself. A relative lack of
pain while walking is always a hopeful sign, but not definitive.
