I was reasonably pleased with Beloki's result as well. Of course I've
got pretty modest hopes for him, I'd like to see him in the top 25 or so
but I don't expect him on the podium.

Anyone see an interview with Zaby in English? Was he as embarrassed
seaming to be infront of the cameras?
It's great to see a "normal bloke" up there... and with a guy like him,
who V recently was only really racing stateside, make great things seem
attainable. :-)

Don't you think LA even eased up a little after passing U? If his radio was
working, you know Johann was yelling at him that he was only "2 seconds
down!".

Strategically it's always a good choice not to wear the Jersey on the first
day(s) to bypass those tiring ceremonies and to spare the team the need to
defend it too early. (I bet the Discovery bus was going wild, though.)

Anyway...did LA purposely drop into the #2 slot?

Ullrich lost more time in the first 19km of this year's tour
than in the whole of the 2003 tour.

Maybe. After passing Ullrich, it looks like he gained little more time
on him. Ullrich finished 6s behind Armstrong on the road, Cyclingnews
says LA passed JU with 4.1 km to go. My ghetto math says that put LA on
pace to finish 76s ahead of JU, or 16s ahead on the road. Wait for the
Chung Chart: they're Tufte-riffic.

Theories:

1) Armstrong should have paced himself better: he burned up early
b) The adrenaline boost from the pulled pedal at the start wore off
after 16 km
iii) Armstrong eased in the final 4km to avoid the early yellow
D) JU increased his pace after LA passed him, and LA also slowed down
due to reason 1 or iii
X) There was a timing error. I have not done an error probability study
on this post, therefore all the numbers herein are invalid. Free Tyler!

I don't think so, but maybe. From all the post-race comments, it
seemed he was a little disappointed not to have won. I think he wanted
to wear yellow wire-to-wire. He said something about waiting until the
TTT to get it.

I'm not sure how it fits in this list of theories, but who's bright
idea was it to give him the "random" drug test? If it was to
intimidate him it didn't work. It might have made him angry. Phil and
Paul said he purposefully made the vampire crew parade past the press
waiting outside the Discovery bus. It will make a good chapter in his
next book.

The blowout in the first 12 miles of the tour is unbelievable.

It seems like the only guy other than Lance to take the GC seriously
this year was Vino, who did okay given that people don't expect the most
ripping TT's from him.

Good luck to Vino for not just handing the tour over to Lance. At least
he wants to *force* Lance win, rather than letting Lance wait for others
to lose,.
