Do there exist heart rate monitors without that funny chest strap? I know there are some which show HR when two fingers are put onto the sensor plates, but that obviously does not monitor the rate constantly.
And the following question is, to get more tech, how do HRMs work in general and why do most (or all?) of them want to be at the chest area.

Way back when, first gen HRM used a thingy on your finger and they were not relaible. W/o trying to be a smart ass-they are around your chest cuz that's where your heart is......They do work well, are very reliable. Good training tool, better than cadence computers certainly. A HRM and power out meter are the best training tools.

The ones that come with a separate chest strap and snap on to the strap with those little steel dimples can be used with disposable stick-on electrodes - like the ones they use when taking an EKG. -- PeteCresswell

Someone brought out a wristband only HRM a few years ago. Can't remember who it was of what it was called. It probably didn't work too well if it's not floating around in shops by now.

Your brain sends electrical signals through your nervous system to your heart to make it beat, those signals can be detected in your skin and that's what the HRM is using. That's also why they work better when you're sweaty; sweat is a better conductor of electricity than dry skin.
Health club machines frequently have some sensors to grab for a heart rate measurement and they're pretty reliable and accurate and work the same way without a chest strap but the wiring is all in the machine - there's no radio signal to your watch.
There were some early HRMs that used light to measure blood pulses through your finger or ear lobe but they didn't work very well, especially if you were moving around or sweating, and they also weren't radio transmitters so the wiring complicated things.

The heart beats all by itself, even individual cells will beat alone, when they're in contact, they synchronize. The electrical signal you're trying to detect is coming from the heart itself, that's why the electrodes are placed over the heart area for maximum sensitivity.
