So in order to make sure i fully express my current knowledge, so that someone can clarify what i don't seem to understand, i'll give a bit background. Recently after deciding i wanted to get more technical in my approach to training, in an attempt to improve performance, i thought i'd do some research into power training. However having spent the majority of Christmas reading various articles/training approaches/theories and then also some rider's own training blogs, i've come across something that i simply don't understand.
Ok with my limited knowledge and understanding, i thought and perceived that a measurement of training intensity and the intensity of which your body is working is heart rate. Loosely put you go slow and steady, and heart rate is low, and go fast and hard, and your heart rate is high.
Now having recently done (successfully [IMG]/img/vbsmilies/smilies/wink.gif[/IMG]) an a-level in physical education (not in any way claiming that this means i'm anywhere near an expert on cycling training) i realise and understand most of the different bodily functions involved in exercise, and that there are many other limitations aside from heart rate that determine the intensity of which your body is working. However HR is easily measured and is widely accepted as an almost perfect indicator.
So having done the research into power training i came across a measurement that is perceived as possibly the most important in cycling Functional Power Threshold (FTP) which is the maximal power output you can produce of the course of 1 hour. Now after reading another range of various articles on ways to improve this most of them suggested the 2 x 20 intervals, were you are working at approx 85-90% of your FTP during the 20 minutes (also known as the sweet-spot).
Now so far so good, all of this was logical and backed up by plenty of excellent research, and i had kind of loosely come across i before, so everything was making sense.
However here's what i don't understand. After reading these articles i thought i'd look at a few training blogs and reports to see what improvements other riders had experienced with this type or similar types of training. So i came across my first blog where a rider posted his measurements before and after a six week training period using a program focused on improving his FTP. It involved lots of sweet spot, 2 x 20 work and then some recovery and low-intensity rides which all seemed pretty good, and very importantly he stayed consistent in the amount he did per week.
However these were the main three figures he gave for his FTP tests:
Before:
- FTP = 237
- Avg Cad = 86
- Avg HR = 163
After:
- FTP = 254
- Avg Cad = 85
- Avg HR = 174
Now i don't know about you, but as far as i'm aware these two tests don't show improvement. What this shows to me is that simply, maybe without realising it, he was working harder on one test than he was on the other which brought about an increase in his FTP, no? Surely the increase in Avg HR shows this?
However i thought this initially but then seemed to be wrong. I came across another website which was actually meant to an informative article on FTP. It again showed two tests done before and after a six week period of specific FTP training showing similar increases in FTP but again significant 10bpm+ increases in avg HR.
Furthermore after reading many articles in various forums, including this one, i discovered that actually many riders don't train with a HRM at all and actually just base there training on power produced. So how do you know the actual intensity of what your working at, because i know from my training that you might think your going max-effort one day but actually your a bit below par from a previous days effort as the HR shows.
Now i thought the whole point of training is to increase power produced at various Heart Rate Intensities so you become more efficient in the various intensity zones (aerobic, anaerobic etc). So how can you achieve this if you don't train with a HRM, and if you do you just completely disregard the figures?
So basically if anyone can provide some info to clarify my lack of understanding, and maybe show me where i'm wrong i would be very happy, as i'm soon going to invest in a PM and would like to be using the figures properly [IMG]/img/vbsmilies/smilies/smile.gif[/IMG] thanks
