  1. Planning on a late May marathon here and just in from a 1:45 training run wearing my heart rate
monitor. My average for the run today was a fairly easy 140-155 bpm.

Anyone care to give me a clue as to an average to shoot for in the marathon?

I DO NOT want to go out too hard and bonk, but would like to finish near my goal of 3:15 or so.

Considering a HR max of 190 and my age (37) what should I shoot for as a
    26.2 mile average heart rate?

  2. Sounds to me like you should aim for 175BPM.

I used a HRM for the London Marathon last year (felt like I cheating somewhat!).

Your HR measurements sound fairly close to mine, I made 3:15. Although I'd done a lot of training
and had to INCREASE my HR during 2nd half.

Only an hour drive from my house, cool lakeside breezes every year, and fairly low key with around
    900 runners.

    thanks for the feedback. JK

In 92 I ran the Dallas White Rock marathon in 3:06. I had my MAX HR tested on a treadmill before the
marathon at the Baylor Tom Landry Sports Medicine Center. MAX HR was recorded at 201. My average HR
for the race was 171. Max HR recorded during this race was 183. I was 31 at the time of the race.

Hope this helps with a frame of reference.

190 max HR would probably perform best at 165-167 avg. HR.

Look at teamoregon.compulsrate.html , and scroll down to a table labeled
    "RACING AND TRAINING PULSES".

Each individual is, well, individual. If you know your Anaerobic Threshold (aka Lactate Threshold),
then the correct pulse rate is 2 to 3% MHR below that.

Example: Say LT is 170 BPM and MHR is 190. Then marathon average HR would be in the 163-166
    BPM range.

It would also be advisable to start out at 10 BPM below the calculated average and work up to that
value over the first 5-7 km in order to avoid excess glycogen burning early.

OK Denny, you've completed your time on this earth and are standing before God.

"Denny" He says, "You were a fly-boy of note. I have a strong affinity with fly-boys, and am minded
to give you the opportunity to go back and re-live ONE flight".

    What would that flight be?

    Roger.

  13. ROUGHLY, 170 bpm. You will undoubtedly experience some cardiac drift due to tiring and dehydration
during the race, meaning that your HR in the end may climb to upper-170s to run the same speed. This
assumes you are trained for the marathon... ANdy Hass
