Hi, Im new here but have been looking in every once and a while and I think
its time for me to lose the extra 70 pounds Im carrying. I really want to
get on atkins low carb but I dont really know how to start. I read the book
but I would like some examples of what others actually eat when they
started. eg. what for breakfast, snack, lunch dinner. What did you have,

until Monday, or after the holidays, start today, now, this second. Other
people's menus were never all that much of a help to me. You have the list of
induction foods, pick things you like from the list, and eat them. I've tried
damn near every diet there is, and this one is a complete no-brainer IMHO.

I agree with a previous poster that you should look over what foods are allowed
during Induction and base your menus on what you like from that list. It's
probably a good idea to stick to the basics for the first couple of weeks (such
as egg dishes (crustless quiche's are good), meat, fish, poultry, salads, etc.
You can google this group for recipes and URLs to sites with low-carb recipes.
After Induction, you'll have more choices and will also have a better idea of
what you like to eat. In looking back on my food diary, I see that during the
first few days I pretty much lived on eggs, meat and salad, mostly because I
decided to start Atkins very suddenly and so was not prepared, planning-wise -- I
had intended to wait another week or two until after my period was over, but I
was inspired (mostly by posts in this group) to simply start the next day (which
worked out well in that I didn't have TIME to go on a last-minute farewell binge
since I was going to start the next day :-). I zealously cleaned out my kitchen
and pantry, giving away most of it to a food bank and tossing the rest. Hard
boiled eggs figured pretty strongly at first because they would be allowed,
nutritious, and ready to eat whenever I opened the refrigerator, so I HAD them
THERE, in my face whenever I was faced with a choice. I bought some smoked
salmon salads from Trader Joe's until I could come up with a decent plan and
grocery list. I then tried some recipes such as a tofu tuna cassarole (it was
okay, but I prefer something other than tofu). Then I fell back on my tried and
true turkey-vegetable soup, which contained only foods allowed on Induction, was
also low-cal and lasted for a long time since I only know how to make a LOT (like
30 cups) of it at once.Keep in mind that you can be creative and that you can eat ANYTHING at any TIME
of the the day -- you don't have to have bacon and eggs for breakfast -- you can
have low-carb lasagna, ham & cheese rollups, stir-fry, salad, hot wings,
WHATEVER. Same goes for the rest of the day, of course. Try not to go overboard
on the cheese (I think it's restricted to 2 or 4 oz/day -- you'll have to check
the list on that), but it can be used on veggies as a nice sauce, is great for
snacks, and can be microwaved into a crisp cheese chip.I post a list of helpful hints on low-carbing each Sunday. Google this group for
"Saffire" and "Weekly" and it'll pop up.--

on specific menus but I can tell you I stuck with meats, eggs, oil, butter,
and low carb veggies. I did not eat bars, shakes, or any type of packaged
'low carb' foods. I did use Splenda in my morning coffee. -
Everybody else has said it, but let me add that while in Induction for
breakfasts, I ate eggs. Any way. Soft-boiled, hardboiled, scrambled, in a
cheese omelette, in a crustless quiche with broccoli and cheese. Lunches
were mainly salads with cheese, real bacon bits, etc., and WHOLE fat
dressing. Dinner was protein of some kind, and more salad or cooked
'approved' veggies. Also, I had better luck with eating naturally portioned
proteins (chicken pieces and pork chops, as opposed to beef roast, in which
I would have had to carefully measure my portions---never used a kitchen
scale; don't have one.)When I started, I just jumped in and didn't look back. Just remember to
hang in there and eat whenever you are hungry while you are in Induction,
but only eat until you are just sated. Eventually, you may need to count
calories (I do that now and stay around 1200 per day.) You may also want to
check out www.fitday.com as a free calorie/carb diary.Welcome! Good luck!

You could do what I did. Open the fridge, pull out a couple of things
on the approved foods list, and *then* figure out what to do with
them. Usually, I just piled a few cold bits on the plate - cukes,
cheese, leftover meats, etc. It doesn't have to be hard or fancy for
the first two weeks, it just has to be on the list.Go to the deli and get a good selection of cold cuts and cheeses, dill
pickles, and your favorite mustard. Then, make a large salad from
lettuce, cukes, peppers, REAL bacon bits, and diced cheese and keep it
in the fridge to eat over time. Add the cheese when you prepare each
serving, you should limit total cheese per day, so you need to measure
it. Or measure it all at once if the salad will be eaten all in one
day.Big Tip: Get an empty 2 liter bottle and fill it with water each night
and put it in the fridge. Drink from this during the day. At the end
of the day, drink whatever's left and refill it. This is the easiest
way to make sure you drink enough water. Alternately, some
combination of smaller bottles that add up to 2 liters (2x 1 liter, 4
16oz, etc). -

menue like when you startedABSOLUTE ESSENTIAL STEP - Decide TODAY (or tomorrow) is the start day,
and then START.......FIRST - Get rid of most or all of your existing "HIgh Carb" type
foodstuffs. Go through the entire kitchen and pantry and refrigerator.SECOND - Buy some stuff on the "Approved for Induction" lists.
THIRD - Begin eating the stuff
FOURTH - Use recipes and daily menu suggestiona already in your Atkins
book.... you bought one, didn't you?FIFTH - Consider buying one or more additional "Low Carb" recipe books
and look for the kinds of stuff you will cook and enjoy eating. My personal starting menu was foolish, I kept trying to figure out how
to cheat the Atkins thing to keep eating some things I liked. It didn't
work, and I wasted about 6 weeks before I realized that I was more
stupid than I was creative.Jim

It can help to abandon the idea of certain foods being reserved for
particular meals. If you identify the low carb foods you like, give
yourself permission to eat any of them at any meal. For me that was low
carb ice cream and cheese for breakfast. It helps to monitor your progress with: http://www.FitDay.com I use the
download version.Cubit

For people who like simplicity, a good start can be described as:
Give Up:
1. All grains and beans
2. All starch like potatoes
3. All dairy other than cheese and butter (and perhaps heavy cream)
4. All fruits
4. All sweets, sugar, "bars", junk food, ice creamMake sure to eat:
1. Fatty meat and fish (not "lean"😉
2. Low calorie vegs
3. Anything else not forbiddenThat alone should start the person in the right direction. Perhaps I
missed something, but it would not be much.i

Except that some fruits, like berries, are fairly LC and contain a big
dose of antioxidants and other useful micronutrients. Simplicity is
good, but it might be a good idea to pick one or two LC fruits to
include on occasion too. After you're past the simply part ;-) -

tried to make spaghetti sauce a couple of weeks ago, but I put so many vegetables

THIS time I made a conscious decision to only use tomato sauce, 2 pieces of

Like LCer09 said "just start." I just used that list of allowed foods for
the induction and went to the store and bought all the foods on that list I
like. I then looked them up to see which ones were basically no carbs and
those were my freebies. Once I committed to that two weeks, and got started
I kept reading and researching and gaining motivation to keep going. Once
you start you will love the instant gratification and that alone kept me
going.good luck

menue like when you startedIf you want to start off with an induction, for two weeks you count
nothing except hold your allowed vegetables to no more than a cup a
day and otherwise eat next to no carbs at all. Get a used copy of
Atkins New Diet Revolution from Amazon for some ideas but in the mean
time for example: Have eggs and bacon for breakfast, lamb and salad
with olive oil or mayonaise for lunch, cheeseburger with no bun and
some broccoli for dinner. Liberally eat at least three no-carb snacks.
Some good ones are popsicles made from splenda-sweetened
jello+koolaid, cream cheese flavored by vanilla, pork rinds, cheddar
cheese. My favorite induction-allowed food is soup made with lamb
stock + cheese + bacon + broccoli. Ideally you won't drink alcohol on
induction, but if you do, I have noticed that a shot of straight vodka
before bed really hits the spot when you aren't consuming
carbohyrates. You'll need some extra sleep for the fist few days but you should
never be hungry.
