I am 55 years old, 1.75m tall, and have been cycling for 6 years. When I started, I was an athletic looking 78kg. I now weigh 68kg and too many people have been asking me with concern if I am sick because they think I am too thin. Looking in a mirror, I can see why, because I am little more than skin and bones, with the only well-fed part being a slight lower belly paunch.
I cycle for fun and do a couple of 100km+ funrides every year, but I do not compete with anybody seriously, so regaining some muscle will be of no consequence as far as cycling performance goes.
I have a healthy appetite, both with regard to quantity and quality. I do not have a sweet tooth so do not eat sweets or cakes or deserts. When I snack it is usually fruit or nuts. I love vegetables and eat more of them than anyone I know. My wife only buys the leanest meats available and removes all fat and chicken skins and such things.
How can I regain some muscle?

Yup! Resistance training. Whey protein is great too. I use the EAS MyoPro Whey. You can find it on ebay pretty cheap compared to going to GNC or some local health food shop.
Dom, some advice here, go find a decent personal trainer if you are new to it. Don't take a chance on hurting yourself by using incorrect technique. Proper form is much more important than slopping up heavy poundages.

🙂 I also want to weigh in on the benefits of strength training. Get some books on fitness for someone your age. I have, for example, a book on cycling over 50. I have enough muscle on my bones in my opinion, so my cycling is more to improve my cardio-vascular system. I put greater miles on as time goes on and I gain endurance.
Learn as much as you can about nutrition as well. Not only proper nutrition but adequate calorie intake is also important.
Enjoy the benefits of good health by being involved in vigourous excercise.

I use Pro-Rated 100% whey protein and get it at Costco... 6 pounds for only 19 bucks. I've looked elsewhere and I can't find it that cheap. So if there's a Costco near you get it there.
