  1. How do you swing your arms when jumping off the starting block?

    Not at all when doing a gun start; when doing a relay start you have two
    choices:

    a) the "circular backswing" which has your hands move in a more-or-less
    circle forwards, then up, then over your head and back, dropping down and
    then going forwards underneath you;

    b) the "straight backswing"has the hands swing backwards underneath you,
    then changing direction and swinning forward again;

    and in each of those above two the goal is twofold:

    a) to initiate a forward and downward motion of the body
    b) to time the forward part of the swing so as to enhance the drive of the
    legs

    Not many of us "jump" off starting blocks, much less care how we would swing
    our arms should we decide to do so.

    And attempting to "look cool" runs the risk of allowing form to prevail over
    function.

  3. I use a drill with my swimmers to teach them how to use their arms when
    they jump off the blocks.

    I have them hold a pull-buoy on in their hands. When I say "go" they
    bring the buoy up to their forheads and throw it forwards "from their
    head". If they do it right, they'll throw the buoy in the general
    direction of the back stroke flags, instead of right at the water. As
    they extend into their throw, they tuck their head streamline.

    Why do you teach them to jump?

    Most racers start with a dive.

  5. full speed ahead. So, no arm movents backwards!

    The coolest start is the one that gets you farthest out front. Now if
    you're not racing and just want to impress some
    not-too-bright-but-totally-HOT chick, swinging your arms up and around
    probably looks the coolest.
