Let me present my approach in a slightly less succinct fashion:
Step one: Improve fore and aft horizontal balance. You want a stable platform, so that head and arm
movements do not cause you to go out of balance. The way you get this horizontally stable platform
is to develop the ability to swim (and kick) while effortless maintaining lower lumbar spine tension
at all times. This may be achieved by (a) a specific underwater kickboard exercise which I've
previously described. (b) standard, traditional kickboard training.
(c) Swimming butterfly and/or doing a lot of back dolphin kicking. (d) doing dryland exercises, such
as those suggested by Boomer:

Step two: Once step one has been achieved, proceed to get rid of any extranneous side to side wiggle
or writhing motions or tendency to veer to one side. The most effective way to do this is to look at
a video of yourself, shot both head on and swimming away. If your hips are flat in the water,
improve their side to side rotation (not to extremes...you don't necessarily want to be "skating on
the side;" but you do want at least a "cheek to cheek" rotation, where your butt is always on the
surface of the water, but is rotating from side to side to first expose one "cheek" and then the
other to the air. The best way to improve hip rotation is to "think hips." I like the analogy of the
hips being the conductor and the body being the orchestra (which follows the conductor, albeit in
virtual synchrony).
If you already have a nice cheek to cheek rotation, then pay more attention to hand entry. (widen,
if necessary, to balance the stroke). If the problem is neither hip rotation nor hand entry, then it
is probably strength/efficiency imbalance R vs L. This may be improved by concentrating mainly on
the non-dominant hand. Firstly, make sure the hand and forearm position are optimum (see step # 3,
below). Secondly, get a greater body assist into powering your anchored weak side hand.
Step #3: Although both hand and forearm position are important, the hand is more important than the
forearm. You can best develop a feel for the water by "thinking hand." Forget about your high elbow
in the beginning of this process. Instead concentrate first on getting your hand position perfect.
Enter, then distinctly tilt the palm downward at least a little at the wrist, so that you get a
distinct "catch." Then FEEL the water for the whole arch of the stroke. Keeping the hand
perpendicular to the direction of travel, as if the hand is literally a paddle and you want to keep
the paddle in the perfect position to apply rearward (not downward) force. Only after the hand
position is completely perfect should you proceed to work on optimizing forearm position through the
high elbow. And optimizing the amount of bend in the elbow (many triathletes/fitness swimmers do not
bend their elbows enough). My only problem with fistgloves is the loss of proprioceptive focus on
hand position. What shall it profit a man that he gain a perfect forearm but lose his hand?
Step #4: Once you have made it to step 4, you are really at the point of splitting hairs and
gilding the lilly. I have written tons about how the typical triathlete and/or adult fitness
swimmer is much more like Brooke Bennett than Ian Thorpe or Alex Popov. Poor kick. Swimming a
"distance" event, rather than a sprint. So I think that the fastest and most efficient way to swim
is not to focus on "swimming tall," but to find the optimum cadence and to work on improving your
ability to maintain this cadence throughout the race. Which means spending your valuable time
training, rather than drilling.
I do think that focusing on stroke length, per se, is not a good idea. Stroke length is simply a
marker for technical proficiency and training. If you work on technical proficiency and training
(see above) your stroke length will improve to the level which is optimum for you. If you focus on
stroke length as a primary endpoint, you will end up doing things (retarding your stroke and gliding
and over-extending your reach) which do not improve your performance. You should, instead,
concentrate on whatever it is that you are swimming for as the endpoint. Time. Feel good pleasure.
Fitness. Whatever. Those are the things you want to improve. Not your stroke length, per se.
