  1. Hi, I would appreciate any feedback and advice on how to cure addictions
to pain killers using alternative medicine. I have been suffering
migraines for over 20 years. For the last 10 years I have been taking
Tylenol #3 (Tylenol with Codeine) which helps reduce the pain
dramatically. I only take Tylenol #3 during the night (2 tablets every
4-6 hours) which helps me fall asleep and wake up with no more migraines
or just a slight headache. Sometimes I force myself to not take any
Tylenol 3, and just wait until the headaches go away, but I then feel
misarable all day. I was told that it is not good or safe to suddenly
stop taking Tylenol with Codeine; instead one must stop slowly, which I
am trying desperately, but am having difficulty doing so. What I would
like to know is if there are any alternative methods that will help me
reduce this addiction. Any homeopathic remedies, alternative medicines,
etc, that you know of and recommend would be of great help. Please let
    me know. Thank you
    Regards,

    -DJ

you may want to visit alt.support.headaches.migraine...and ask your question..

as a headacher myself I can appreciate your dilemma....

have you seen a headache specialist?? there are lots of "preventives" that are
used...not sure if you have tried any...sometimes it takes a long trial to get
    the right combo...

alternatively...some have success with magnesium and/or feverfew...not sure of
the dosages,,but you would need to take them to PREVENT,,,not treat an acute
    headache

actually it sounds like you are "suffering" from rebound headache,,,a reality
from taking pain relievers on a regular basis...

sorry you are in the "headache" population....it ain't no fun..

    good luck

actually you are more "dependent" on the T3 than actually addicted..there is a
    difference
also unfortunately...you probably will still need some kind of "rescue meds"
    from time to time

  4. Hey DJ,
I haven't worked with addicts, but I have seen a few people overcome
    migraines with some odd things:
    1. Water - A lot! A brother had migraines that developed out of the
blue and would come and go a few times a week. He tried prescription
painkillers for months with little help. A natural practitioner
recommended increasing water intake to the point he was carrying a
water bottle around with him everywhere he went. The headache stopped
at that clinic and they didn't come back. He's a healthy guy and to
think he was dehydrated wasn't the first thing you would have thought.

    2. Feel for a calcification on the 1st Thoracic - I knew a woman who
suffered migraines 24 hours a day for 2 years. She attempted suicide
5 times. Drugs just caused her to mimic sleep. A method that
resembled long use of accupressure was applied to the calcification.
The point was held for about 2 hours after she upped her nutrition esp
with mineral supplements that dissolved the calcification and her
headaches stopped. The next day she looked like the weight of the
world was lifted. I knew her for about 2 years following that. About
6 months after that first effort she would get smaller headaches, but
    never like a migraine.

    Hi DJ,

    You are having rebound headaches.

You body is calling for the drugs again.

I did this for years, was a patient of Diamond Headache Clinic. I had to go to
the hospital ( in Chicago, where Diamond has a floor) three times. They put me
on an IV to clear this up, then start over on a new drug.

20/20 did a show recently, which stated even taking over the counter meds three
times a week would cause rebounds. People were going to rehabs, one man was
taking 50 pills a day! He no longer has headaches.

It is really hard, especially if you are still working. What I finally did, was
quit taking pain pills. The first two days I had to wrap my head in ice, 20
    minutes on, 20 off.

It is amazing how much better I felt with taking no pain pills at all. It
seemed a cloud was lifted, that had me feeling lousy most of the time.

It is still tempting to reach for the pain pills, but I found an ice pack that
wraped around my neck, which helped, there are also pressure bands that help.

I have tried alt. products, nothing helped, much for headaches. Some people are
having luck with the NTI. It helped me at first, but like everything else,
    didn't last long.

Dr Jim Boyd DDS invented it because he had headaches. He posts some on sci med
dentistry, he was also on Good Morning America. He e-mailed me when he learned
I was a patient of Diamond. My doctor there was Dr. Fritag and is who Dr Boyd
worked with in getting Diamond to help him get it FDA approved.

    It might help.

    http://www.nti-tss.com

Good luck, and believe me I wish you all the best.

Hope you can return to feeling normal, sometimes we forget that feeling.
    Wonderful when it returns.

The basis of your problem is that your ailment has not been addressed, just
    the
symptom (headaches). The path you have chosen has taken a single ailment and
added a new one (addiction to pain killers). I would urge you to find a
    competent
wholistic practitioner (a doctor of natural medicine, a holistic doctor, a
    traditional
Chinese medicine practitioner) who will work through your problem. They will
    not
addict you to anything and should eliminate your headaches for all time. Of
    course
you will likely require some ginseng to purge all the dangerous toxins your
medications have left in your body.

  11. Indeed a holistic doctor is needed. Codeine is not really recommended for
long-term use. To stop it, u need to visit a doctor for tailing down the
    dose gradually.
Have u ever found out any specific factors that contribute to your
migraine? The goal of treatment is to prevent and not simply relieving the
headache. Medically, there are also other types of drugs that can be used.
Non-medical ways such as cool compresses, a dark quiet room and stress
relieving may help. Indeed, some migraine sufferers have stress-induced
    headache as well!

Boy that reminds me of a guy named Bob Dillion who I met at Diamond. He had a
machine blow up in his face. We numbered our migraines from 1-10. He had had a
number 10 for three straight years, and yes he had tried to kill himself also.
We should thank God for our many blessings everyday.

    ************************************
What is sadder is that Jan has two parents with Alzheimers disease who live
with her brother who she has accused in the past of being abusive
to her father. Why is Jan not spending more time with her ailing parents and
    less time posting her drivel??

Jan says that this is the "happiest time of my life". How is that possible
with two parents with Alzheimers Disease?? Something just does not add up.

But maybe her parents are better off not having Jan take care of them. Her
intolerance and lack of understanding are not good qualities for someone
taking care of someone with Alzheimers Disease. Maybe they are better off
    with her brother.

Let us all pray that Jan's parents pass quietly and peacefully. Lord knows
    what they must be enduring.

You don't know how much longer your parents will be on this earth.

You waste so much time in this newsgroup when you have two parents who may
    be close to death.

You say this is the "happiest time of your life" when you have two parents
in end stage Alzheimers who do not even recognize you, by your own
admission. Happiest time of your life with two parents dying a horrible
death???? And you call yourself a loving child. And you think that your
parents would be proud of you NOW??? Have you lost touch with reality??

Unfortunately they had no control over how their children would turn out and
whether they would be there in their time of need. They may not know who
you are but God sure knows that you are not spending as much time with them
    as you should.

You are just a very selfish person who thinks about her own happiness at the
expense of her parents who are dying a horrible disease.

Having loving children spend as much time as they can with them IS something
that they could really use. The choice is yours. Think about it. After they
pass you will no longer be able to spend time with them. Time is limited.
They are your parents after all.

God is watching. You cannot fool him with your rationalizations about why
you spend so much time on usenet when the time could better be spent with
    your parents.

    Go visit your parents.

Just like Jan is happier than she has ever been even though she has two
    parents dying of Alzheimers

Please get into therapy!!!!!!! Denying that your parents are dying is not
a healthy thing. It is terribly hard to accept the impending loss of loved
ones, but denial is NOT the answer. As much as it may hurt your pride to
accept Rich's words & advice, he is correct. You are spending your time
away from them (here on usenet) AND are even denying that at their age and
in their condition that they are, in fact, dying.

Please find a good therapist (none of that TFT [censored]) and spend time with
your parents while you still can. Usenet will be hear when you have gotten
your priorities in order. Honor your mother & father, Jan, they won't be
    here forever.

**(((oh, wait, those last two were andrew kingoff doing his usual
    copy-a-troll-any-troll routine.....)))**

Remember when I told you that you should visit your parents more often
because they may not have much more time left in this world and you
told me that I had no idea what I was talking about because your parents
were NOT dying. Within weeks of my comment your father died.
Perhaps without even seeing your parents I know more about their illness
    than you do.

And your loving nature is equally evident. OTOH maybe it is better that you
DON'T visit your mother. She has enough problems as it is.

And since your mother is now staying with you it might be helpful to spend
quality time with her rather than working yourself up in this newsgroup.

You have clearly gone on record saying that you worked hard all your life
and now that you are retired you want to enjoy the good life which is why
you choose to not spend that much time with your mother. Hopefully you will
not resent your mother when her Alzheimer's Disease makes her difficult and
    frustrating to care for.

    *******************************************

i could go on, i'm sure, but i think anyone who reads this will get the gist
of the irony about rich making accusations about 'common decency' in
    usenet/email exchanges.

as for all of rich's hounding and goading and badgering and
**extremely-poor-taste** teasing, here is something that quite detracts from
rich's usual lame excuse that he is only 'trying to help' jan, and more than
puts all of his MHA mental health diagnosing in the category that it belongs

I personally do not think it is ethical to do any form of psychotherapy over
the phone Are you concerned about the limitations in make a diagnosis
    without
seeing the person in real life???

    and this:

I personally do not think it is ethical to do any form of psychotherapy over
the phone unless you have previously had a face to face relationship with a
client and that person moved. I believe that it is important to have face to
face contact when evaluating someone for a mental health problem or treating
that person. Body language and a person's appearance may be an important
part of an evaluation that you would miss if you did it by telephone unless

When acetaminophen is ingested at excessive amounts, toxins form which can
lead to life-threatening liver damage. However, the liver normally secretes
a toxin fighting compound called glutathione, which counteracts the poison.
Chronic alcohol abuse over time causes "depletion of glutathione" --
breaking down the body's defense against even slight overdoses of
acetaminophen. The researchers note that other victims of accidental
overdose had been fasting while taking the drug. They speculate that
starvation may lead to reduced liver glutathione levels, raising toxicity
    risks.

A spokesperson for McNeil Consumer Products Co., the makers of Tylenol, says
Lee's study "underscores the need for more consumer awareness, which we
totally support. You've got to read and follow the dosing instructions."
Those label instructions include an "alcohol warning" which reads: "if you
generally consume 3 or more alcohol-containing drinks per day, you should
consult your physician for advice" on taking the pain reliever.

The New England Journal of Medicine (1997;337(16):1112-1117)

COMMENT: As mentioned in a previous newsletter this toxic liver reaction can
be completely avoided if one were to take the supplement N-acetyl Cysteine
or L-Glutlamine (usually about 500 mg one to three times per day). These
amino acids are two of the rate-limiting components for the formation of
glutathione. If one needs to take acetaminophen for any reason on a regular
basis it would be wise to take these two supplements to limit liver damage.
This study emphasized the importance of this recommendation if one also
consumes alcohol on a regular basis. This is not an insignificant
observation considering 10% of our popluation are addicted to alcohol.

In regards to migraines, have you looked at "feverfew?" Some evidence

Please let
    me know. Thank you
    Regards,
