I mean, think about it - if youre able to maintain a high power output while your heart rate is drifting upwards, doesnt that just mean youre getting more bang for your buck? Or are we just being sold a bill of goods by the heart rate monitor manufacturers?
And what about the idea that a high heart rate drift is a sign of poor fitness or inadequate training? Is that really true, or is it just a convenient excuse for coaches and trainers to push their clients harder? Ive seen plenty of riders who can maintain a high power output for hours on end, despite having a heart rate thats all over the map. Are they just anomalies, or is there something more to it?
And lets not forget about the role of genetics in all of this. We know that some people are naturally more efficient than others, and that heart rate drift can vary wildly from person to person. So is it really fair to say that reducing heart rate drift is the key to improved efficiency, or are we just ignoring the elephant in the room?
Im not trying to be contrarian here, but I genuinely believe that we need to take a closer look at the relationship between heart rate drift and efficiency. Is it really as simple as lower heart rate drift = better efficiency, or is there more to it than that?
