Out of curiosity, how many different base power values are there for training schemas? I'm familiar with two: functional threshold (FT) and maximal aerobic power (MAP). Is anybody's schema based on lactate threshold (LT)? VO2MAX? What does Carmichael use? How many others are there? I'm less interested in the details of the schema (e.g., how many levels or ranges and what the percentage values are). I just want to know how many different base power values are used to define the schemas.

I've come across:
LT -Lactate Threshold (OBLA), roughly equates to 4mmol/L or deflection point thereabouts
MSS - Maximal Steady State, roughly equates to 30min TT
FTP - Functional Threshold Power, roughly equates to 60min TT
VT - Ventilatory Threshold, deflection point during VO2max test
CP- Critical Power as appropriated by Carmichael, eg CP5, CP10, CP20 etc, sustainable power for specified durationsNow I'm not sure if there are "training schemas" associated with each, but I've heard of each of those values being used to define training zones.

To clarify, LT is *not* OBLA, which is the workrate at 4 mmol/L. LT would be about 2.X mmol/L.
Critical power, as mentioned above (rather than the correct use of the term, e.g., Monod critical power) is used by Joe Friel (not Carmichael). Carmichael bases his power zones on the average power of two, 3-mile TTs (i think).

So, are Friel's training zones based on one critical power number or several (CP5, CP10, CP20, etc.) as peterpen suggested? Does Carmichael have a name for his base power number?

Friel's zones, as far as i'm aware, are based on multiple "critical power" points (e.g., 5-secs, 5-mins, 10-mins, etc)
I'm not aware of a specific name for the Carmichael system

As nearly as I can tell, he bases his power levels off of LT and VO2MAX. If he has trademarked these generic technical terms, he has some very good trademark lawyers.
