2 to 14 days. And yes, if you eat below your eminence calories.

Ketosis merely means yes you are burning fat for fuel. Nothing more. So
called "heavy" ketosis will not make you lose weight faster. You are either
in ketosis or not (like pregnancy)-- there's no "light" or "heavy" to it.

There are many factors that affect the testing strips. Hydration, time of
day, how much fat you are eating, and how long you've been on the diet and
    whether you've lowcarbed before.

The strips only test for one type of ketone (there are four). The strips go
bad easily, and may have already been bad before you bought them. The
strips only test for what is dumped in the urine-- it has no information on
what is going on in the bloodstream (you might be using all the ketones and
have no leftovers to pee away).

Pay attention to the other possible signs-- bad breath? Loss of appetite or
reduced appetite? Change in energy level (either a surge or an increased
endurance)? These may mean you are in ketosis but are very well hydrated or
not creating excess ketones of one type.

Hey there Bear. Got more time on my hands these days. Lost my job.
Haven't psyched myself up to go looking for another yet but I'm getting over
the drama blues (finally) so I thought I'd poke my head in today.

  5. It took me about a month before I got a reading on Ketostix that I liked.
They are fun and help get one motivated, but don't be overly worried about
    it.

I must be a real freak, because I can show 'negative' ketones for a couple
of days, negative one morning -- then I low carb for a few hours and show
'moderate' or darker ketones -- then after a 30 carb supper, it's back to
'negative' that night and next morning before breakfast.

That's the most extreme example, but I seem to go into 'purple stick'
condition very easily after a short time (day, few hours) of low carbing.
(Especially if I've got busy and skipped a meal and got run down and
hungry.) The first time I tested for ketones I'd been very low carb for
several days, had fasting BG in low 60s one day, daytime BG's mostly in 80s.
Energy felt different. So after a few days of that I bought some Ketostix
and sure enough they turned between 'moderate' and 'large.'

I stayed in it by very low carbing for a while then added some carbs,
irregularly, and seemed to pop in and out for a while. I seem to feel the
energy change each time there is a big change in color.

I've heard there is a delayed action factor, that when the body switches
back to carb burning it may dump the remaining ketones. That fits part of
what happens to me (continued purple after resuming carbs) but does not fit
the sudden recurrance of purple after a day or two of 'negative'.

Anyway I'm looking into how this relates to BG, as the keto strips are much
cheaper than the BG strips. 🙂

I fall out of ketosis (as registered by the keto stick) whenever I keep my fat
intake low relative to protein regardless of how low my carbs are. If I eat a
fatty meal it turns purple within a couple of hours.

Somewhere between 2 and 5 days is typical for showing ketosis on
the sticks. However, some people use so much of their ketones as
fuel that they never have enough excreted to show on the sticks.
Drinking lots of water can also dilute your urine to where ketones
    don't register on a stick.

Sticks also expire from heat and humidity, and you could have gotten
a bad batch. If you bought some LC-brand of sticks off the shelf,
instead of asking a pharmacist for the Bayer Keto-stix that they
keep in the pharmacy area, they are more likely to be bad (as well
as about 4 times as expensive).

If you're testing in the morning, try testing in the evening, as a
lot of people test negative in the morning. This isn't a pregnancy
test, you don't need first morning urine.

Also, if you are not passing them *very* quickly through the stream,
you can wash the reagent right off the stick and get negative readings.
If you think that might be the problem, a supply of small paper cups
and a very quick dip will solve it.

  10. Hi

The stix registered for me in a couple of days.....that was on July 22
    of this year.

I had kept the carb count below 20 or 25 since then and started to
move up on some days about 6 weeks ago. Problem is I really am not
that hungry and I think I am eating out of habit. The amount of low
carb foods available has made this almost painless...unless you like
popcorn, potatoes and fruit---I ahve put them aside until last week
when I bought some strawberries and cut up melon at the salad bar in
    our local supermarket.

I need some advice. I did low fat for 5 months---lost a lot of arm and
leg muscle...then did some reading and talking and switched to low
carb in July. I had a goal of 165 and am down to from155 to 158
depending on when and where i stand on the scale. I am happy with the
weight, but, need to lose more in the waist and want to gain some arm
and leg muscle back. I am doing arm exercises now.

I am getting a little concerned about the stix(just about always in
    the middle(between 40 & 80 but never not colored)). I have always
shown a color and usually it is in the middle and to the
right--between 40 and 80). I have thought that as long as I was
coloring them(2nd batch of them) I was in ketosis and burning fat.
Hence, I must be eating enough as the weight has stabilized.

However, I am concerned. TO put this in realisitic terms:

Yesterday, here is what I ate:

Breakfast: Two large bowls of low carb cereal with the Hood no fat/low
carb milk and 3 strawberries along with three or four tablespoosn of
melon--low carb cereal is 9 grams and the milk is around 5 & I don't
know exactly about the fruit--say it is 6--this would total out at
about 35 for breakfast. I worked through lunch and had 32 ounces of
water by noon-finished the entire 64 by 2 PM and had 24 more by 10 PM.

Supper was 2 cheese hamburgers on the grill with two of the low carb
rolls(13 carbs each) along with some chunks of chicken and mixed fresh
vegetables I had cooked in some spaghetti sauce I had made(maybe 5
carbs total) and I also had a generous helping of tossed green salad
with olive oil and vinegar. Naturally, while I was cooking I ate 3 or
4 slices of American cheese! Supper totaled out conservatively at 30+.

Snacked here last night on generous hands full of smoked almonds(at
least 2 carbs) and walnuts(2+) along with some salted Macadamia
nuts(1). Total of at least 5. This was washed down with a bottle of
    the low carb beer(2.6 grams).

Total carb count for the day was a minimum of 70! I ate quite a bit
the day before also, not as much carbs though. I think the highest day
before this week was 39. Otherwise I am in the 20's.

I also did a whole bunch of heavy physical work yesterday(digging to
    repair drainage problems outside).

It seems like the stix might not be telling me something or, possibly,
I am off base with what I am using them to do and that is to be an
indicator of how much fat cells from stores I am loosing. I am looking
    for any ideas?

I sitck to this low carb idea religiously and find it easy...problem
is to inch back into more carbs. Today i even ate an apple! First in
    months.

I certainly know it is not water weight as I know how much I have lost
and certainly know how much I drink!

Like i mentioned up front, I have not really had too much movement in
the weight--still from 7-10 pounds under what I wanted to be. This is
making me happy, especially since the waist seems to be getting a
little smaller and my arms and legs and face(so I am told) cannot get
    any smaller!

    Thanks for listening.
