Is it possible that the conventional wisdom surrounding Zone 2 rides is completely misguided, and that the recommended duration of 2-3 hours is actually a recipe for stagnation and burnout? It seems that every training plan and cycling coach out there is espousing the benefits of lengthy Zone 2 rides, but whats the actual scientific basis for this?
If the goal of a Zone 2 ride is to build endurance and increase aerobic capacity, then shouldnt we be focusing on intensity and frequency rather than duration? Why are we still stuck on this outdated idea that longer is better, when in reality, its the quality of the ride that matters, not the quantity?
Moreover, isnt it time we acknowledged that the one-size-fits-all approach to Zone 2 rides is fundamentally flawed? What works for a 25-year-old professional cyclist is unlikely to work for a 45-year-old amateur with a desk job. Shouldnt we be tailoring our training plans to our individual needs and goals, rather than blindly following some arbitrary guideline?
And what about the role of recovery in all of this? Is it possible that our obsession with Zone 2 rides is actually hindering our ability to recover and adapt to the demands of training? By pushing ourselves to ride for hours on end, are we not actually increasing our risk of overtraining and injury?
The more I think about it, the more Im convinced that the traditional approach to Zone 2 rides is due for a serious overhaul. So, Im asking: whats the optimal duration for a Zone 2 ride, really? Is it 30 minutes, 2 hours, or something entirely different? And whats the actual science behind it?
