  1. Due to my employer hitting hard times, I have a chance to take some voluntary unpaid leave. Together
with summer holiday, I could get a block of time from mid-May to the end of July. Does anyone know
whether this is enough to do all of the Norsth Sea route, in practice (i.e., you know of an actual
time it took)? Failing that, any other major expedition suggestions?

I usually tour with a recumbent trike (Trice Micro) trailer and camping gear. I'd be starting from
    SE Norway.

    TIA, SteveC

Uh...wouldn't you be better off with some kind of boat?

Here's a link to the webpage of a guy who cycled the North Sea Route earlier this year:

    fastload.netfastload.net

Looking at the site now, it seems many of the pages are blank, I don't know why that might be and
seem to remember this didn't used to be the case. Anyway, he seems friendly enough (I've seen him
post on the Cycling Plus forums) so perhaps he'd give share some of his experience with you if you
emailed him, there's an address on his site.

Seems to be a number of other North Sea Route links collected there too:

    fastload.netlinks.html

Hope that might help as a start.

If its unpaid leave check out the ferry prices before you organise too much - they are not cheap
    between Norway and the UK

Uh this is a cycling ng - the North Sea route has about 6000km of signed cycle-route.

Thanks, Bob, that's a good start. He doesn't seem to sum up how long major sections of the trip
    took, though.

I wouldn't go to a newsgroup for help with that kind of decision.

Try these two which are an itinery for the route. It doesn't do the whole route but (just Hamburg
round to Goole via Norway) but its enough to work out how long it would take.

Why not? You can get medical and legal advice here so why not career counselling ;-)

Career counselling? Is that a service for cyclists who are afraid of getting back on their bikes
after losing control and skidding into a crash barrier?

I usually tour with a recumbent trike (Trice Micro) trailer and camping gear. I'd be starting from

I've done Harwich-Newcastle (2 weeks including 2 rest days, and ferries from/to Holland) and Nieuweschans-
Hamburg (5 days). The UK part isn't really suitable for recumbent trikes, I think; lots of barriers
on the cycle path parts. Actually ANY bike with full camping gear will have a hard time on some
stretches. Between Harwich and Newcastle there's about 1 mile alongside the North Sea, the rest is
further inland. The German part does follow the coast better... on the inshore side of the dykes!
And again plenty of barriers, again not very trike friendly. I used a Baron, but something a bit
more upright (with suspension!) might be more apropriate.

    Mark van Gorkom.

P.S.: the camping along the German Noth Sea coast will be crowded and noisy in summer (and
expensive, but no more than some UK ones *shudder* )

Thanks, Mark. Interesting to hear you can carry enough on a Baron. I've fancied one of
    them for ages!

You can, but only if you're a dedicated minimalist :-) I use two Ortlieb backrollers with (large)
side pockets, and one small under seat bag (about 50 liters total volume), and that's barely enough.

    Mark van Gorkom.

Hi Steve, I am thinking of doing the route myself starting in March, I have planned for 100 days which I am certain will give me plenty of time to complete the route and see some sights - please let me know if you find any complete information about people that have completed the route as it would be good to have an idea on costs and duration. If you do find anything out please e-mail me on [email hidden] - good luck with it.
