    Ken powers ahead on Tour

    MCMAHONS Point cyclist Ken Raupach recently made the top few hundred in
    a leg of the 2006 Tour de France.

    Raupach cycled 191km in 1hr 12min and was one of 5000 amateur cyclists
    to finish the leg.

    About 2000 amateurs did not finish.

    Originally a runner, Raupach started taking cycling seriously in 2004
    because of knee problems.

    ``It was the best sporting event I've done - a glorious sporting and
    cultural event,'' Mr Raupach, 44, said.

    ``We went three weeks before it to train in the mountains.

    ``France is a magnificent place to ride.

    ``The roads are well-made, there's not many pot holes and the drivers
    respect you (the cyclist).''

    Having started in about 4000th place - cyclists who are not French are
    not allowed to start in the first 2000 riders - Raupach finished the
    event in 254th place.

    D'uh... if you'd look at the website for this year's Etape' , you'd see
    that the stage culminated with a climb up Alpe d'Huez. The results
    were posted with an overall time AND a time for the final climb.

    The local paper that was reporting the story didn't understand that,
    and posted the schmuck's climb time, not overall time. He wasn't all
    that fast at all.
