  1. So, curious to see what people's MAX speeds out there are. Using a computer, please, and please no beers before you answer! :p

I've only recently gotten out in some areas where I was able to hit 35MPH (down hill, of course!) and could have taken it faster but I was going to loose my group (first time on that route, so I needed to follow not lead!!)

  2. My fastest speed ever was 56mph down a steep hill in Pennsylvania. I used to do amature downhill ski racing, so I'm used to getting the most out of my aerodynamic position. Fastest ever on the flats was just over 40mph, but for a VERY short time.

56mph pff....... Rather you than me 🙂

Ive only just about managed 42mph down a steep but short hill around my area in Essex UK, the only way of reaching that is by pushing hard through the 2 corners on the hill and letting the bike drift out wide. Its a case of not creaming into the oncoming traffic on the exit of the hill, havant been over the middle line yet and want to keep it that way funnily enough.

  4. How about editing the poll to show kilometer equivalents for thos of us who do not live in one of the very few countries that actually measures things in miles and inches? ;-)

I'm an American, but after 10 years here I don't think in MPH any more.

    So here's my answer:

I dawdle at around 14-15 kmh (9-10mph), Cruise tranquilly at about 22-24, Cruise jazzy at about 26-28, Cruise rockin at at about 32, and all out is about 35 kmh (21/22 mph).

Downhill is a different story, and may I remind you that I ride a fully-loaded, aerodynamic-impaired, water buffalo (and like it!).

    Sara

  5. fastest ive ever gone was 78/79 kmh, resulting in a major crash that left me in hospital for a rew mths.

  6. A bit scared of speed at the moment, had a set of handlebars work loose on a downhill about a month ago. Sinking brake levers - not nice.
I never had a computer on my touring bike until recently, but I reckon it's faster than the mountain bike with slicks I used to commute on and I've got to 35 mph on downhills on that. On the flat 23-25 mph but not for any great distance.

    56 mph = 90.123264 kph :p

I found this cool feature on google. If you type in a speed in mph, you can get it in kph. Ex. "65mph in kph" and google will say "65 mph = 104.60736 kph".

Works for other units of measure too. "80f in c", "20ft in m" etc.

    😎

  8. A very close approximation would be multiply mph by 50/31.
    62 mph X (50/31)= 100 kph.

That would be math. Math and I aren't very good friends. 😉

  10. But we all need math. Math is our friend 🙂

  11. As a cummuter the best I usually see is 30-32 mph (50Kph) down an overpass but I recently took a vacation in Hiawassee, Georgia and experienced my first hills.

    WHAT a THRILL!

After learning what real PAIN was on a bike by climbing the Gap between Hiawassee and Young Harris I enjoyed the finest Downhill I could imagine. It started slow but steady without any curves in the distance - coasting / recovery speed was 35mph(57kph). Then it appeared to level off and I maintained cadence (~90) in my 53/13 but as the road crested the REAL downhill was about to begin. My breath was taken away when I saw a steep and STRAIGHT descent that went on for about as far as I could see. After my speed leveled off at 38 mph (61kph) and I became acclamated to the speed in about minute I decided to pedal as fast as I could and Topped out at 41mph (66 kph)!

I hope for more opportunities in the future for bothe the PAIN and the GAIN.

  12. What a great description Theophan!

you could also just divide by .62 to convert MPH to KPH or multiply by the same to go from KPH to MPH.

  14. Average for me would be around 20mph. I can hit the mid 30's for a dead on sprint, but that will not be for long. I once hit 58 on a downhill.

  15. Yes, that is the same thing. 31/50=.62 So, dividing by .62 is the same as multiplying by the reciprocal (50/31).

  16. really .. we all do it for the speed...

fastest speed i recorded on my trip computer 78 kms/hr

fastest speed i recorded in a road race .. 64 kms/h ... critiriums in adelaide .. 3 off us came off , in the sprint , 3 riders down massive damage , but i'll remember that all my life .
    ......... aint cycling fun !

See, isn't math great. You can use two differnt approaches and still come up with the same answer.

  18. The city I live and ride in (Little Rock, Arkansas, USA) is very hilly. Some are very steep. I've hit 60+ MPH (>100 km/h) on a few. Scary, but fun too. On the flats I average around 18-20 MPH.

  19. I got reminded the other day that road speed limits apply to bikes aswell as cars etc.. its funny that ive done one hill locally 10s of times breaking the speed limit by upto 10mph+, and its never crossed my mind that im breaking the law. Now its has crossed my mind, ive come to the conclusion that im not that bothered and will carry on breaking the law.

  20. One time on a ride I looked down and it said my max was 88 MPH. I thought, "Hey, all I need now is a flux capacitor!" Obviously it read a little wrong. 44 MPH is the fastest I've been. I've been able to average 21 MPH on certain flat rides.
