  1. I've been lifting wieghts for about five years now and have a solid
routine, but my girlfriend wants to start and I need to help her. I can
advise her on when and how much she should lift, but all of my workouts
(bench, curl, military, ect..) are for large shoulder and upper body
strength. What are some good exercises that women usually do. She wants some
good free weight exercises for some of the trouble spots like triceps, inner
thigh, calfs, glutes, and so on. Any womens routine would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

You've been lifting for years and you don't know how "girls" workout?
Buddy, basically the same exercises just not as heavy. Please don't tell me
you're gonna say you don't want her to get all "Big and Bulky."

Trace, you missed his "all of my workouts (bench, curl, military, ect..) are
for large shoulder and upper body strength."

You know, the lightbulb look that you and I laugh at when they wobble
through the gym on their chicken legs. His girlfriend doesn't need his
advice. She needs a new boyfriend,

I think normally we'd say that she should do the same routine as you. Except
    your routine is retarded.

There are things called 'legs' which she has. You probably have them too.
Squats and deadlifts are good for making them stronger.

Thanks, guys. My girlfriend asked me to post this because she didn't
like my workout. I know less weight and more reps. After two weeks she said
her traps looked "big and bulky" and she asked for some more workouts on the
areas I mentioned. I guess this isn't the forum for weight training advice
and discussion. As for the light bulb, I don't mind being laughed at with a
bench of 320. It keeps me from having to suck "Trace's" [censored] to try and get
laid. If anyone else has real advice, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks for the help guys,

You could have kicked around the newsgroup via Google groups or Free
    Agent, right?

What is that one Web site...

I'm still thinking, but one of the messages found at the URL above
included the name Krista and that rings a bell.

    Got it.

Best of luck. And doesn't your town have a library? Or a bookstore?
    WTF.

    But, yeah, hth.

  7. AHHHHH! I'm poking out my mind's eye!!!! AHHHHH!!!

Yah- folks like that should really wear pants. Looking at the calves
makes it all to easy to see the scrawny dude inside trying to get out.

Should be a requirement at the gym; anytime your upper arm is bigger
than your calves you gotta quit the upper body workout. Period.

Any time, ya chauvinist! Best of luck to you and your girlfriend in
your workouts. But, yeah, check out the book store! Joyce Verdal had
several books out a million years ago. I bet there are a ton of new
authors on the shelves concentrating on /female/ weight training. <g>

I'm with her; when I did whip snatches my traps bulked fast and it looked weird
and none of my clothes fit right. So I quit, traps are useful but not enough to
screw up my whole wardrobe. ;-)

Rock-bottom back squats. Start her out with deep knee bends until she can go
all the way down with good form; heels on the ground, knees wide, back flat,
    head up....

    Teach her how to bench.

Funny thing: After I started working out back in March, my calves
were the first thing in which I noticed improvement. I remember
glancing at one of the mirrors and thinking "Wow! I don't look like a
    stick-man anymore!" 🙂

My first four exercises are squat machine, leg extension, leg curl
    and calf raise.

Why higher reps for her? Is she more interested in muscular endurance than
    strength for some reason?

320 isn't that bad. (assuming you're under 180 bwt) Keep at it, punkin.

Let's hear which brand of "squat machine" before we decide that.

Now if he started with squats and deadlifts, that would be a good
    conclusion.

Oh, I'm not quite as militant as I once was wrt machines. While not ideal,
there are some machines that are pretty effective and usually safe wrt
injury potential. The better ones don't lock you into one plane of movement
but incorporates some flexibility. Hammerstrength makes some nice stuff, for
    example.
