i just bought some new shimano wheels and i want to take off the spoke guard on the rear wheel? what are the steps to taking off the cassette and everything else? thanks.

jonathanIf I were you...take it your local shop and have them do it. If you want to do it yourself, you're going to need some Park Tools to get it off. This may cost you a few bucks vs. just paying the local mechanic $5.00 to take it off in 10 minutes.

Is there a reason to take it off? I thought the purpose was to protect the spokes from being mangled if the chain overships. It can't weigh very much, eh?

I used scissors. It's just hard plastic.
It serves no purpose if your derailleur is adjusted properly.
