Not sure what you're asking. Are you asking how to prepare for a long trip within 48 hours of the trip or 3 months of training before a long trip?.

I guess I am looking more for what kind of training regimes people do. What seems to work best for training to do long rides and what it takes to be competetive.

Try the "Cycling Training" sub-forum. When you post there you'll need to say what your goals are, where you're at now with your conditioning/riding, and other such things. -
You must prepare yourself with every thing that will not be cause to failure in your ride like you should check all the parts of the cycle, check that all part is working good and if necessary than use good lubricants.
