Right. I've tried googling without success and I thought you guys might be
    able to help me.

I'm a dancer with extremely muscular thighs. I like the muscle, but they're
out of proportion to the rest of my body and it's frustrating that jeans
sometimes don't fit because my thighs are too built up. How do I tone it
down without it turning to flab? It's not fat, so it's not a dieting issue.
I work out (cardio, very light weights), but I try to avoid exercises that
focus on the thighs because I certainly don't want them any more pumped up.

    Any advice?

Yikes, you are a dancer that wants to selectively atrophy your
thighs. Well, I suppose that you could stop dancing and use a
    wheelchair for a while.

Will not be easy, at all.

You're not going to get muscle turning to flab, looking on the bright side.
That doesn't ever happen (what can happen is sports player retires, stops
training, but carries on eating like he always did, then he loses muscle
because he doesn't use it and gains fat because he's eating too much).

If you really want to lose the muscle, then you'll have to try to avoid
using it for a long time (which will be impossible if you want to keep
dancing) or alternatively diet, try to avoid eating much protein. The
problem with the latter is it's not healthy, will screw up your metabolism
for a while after you stop dieting, will strip muscle off your upper body as
well, and you still probably won't lose much muscle until you get down to
    unpleasantly low body fat percentages.

You might be better off doing some upper body work if 'proportion' really
matters to you and buying loose fit jeans.

Yes, Charles has a very bad case of antibiotic resistant syphillis.
Just have sex with him, and don't get cured for a few years. That
should melt a few pounds off.

    Running?

Running is a great way to burn calories, but it's not going to help unless
he takes in less. BTW if you do lose lean mass from running, the stuff on
your thighs is going to stick around longer than anything else.

If you're concerned about proportion, one solution would be to build up
    everything else ...

Why not get some better fitting jeans ? Get loose fit jeans, get a larger size
and use a belt, or something like that. If you're getting slacks, have them
take the waist in for you.

Sounds to me a lot like you're just whining though. And having better than
average legs seems to be a prtty silly thing to whine about. I mean, I don't
believe you have thighs like a pro bodybuilder just from dancing, do you ?

No, not like a pro bodybuilder, but they're larger than I'd like because I'm
*female.* <g> Sorry if that wasn't obvious. So building my upper body is not
desirable because I don't want to look like a bodybuilder. Of course I know
I can just wear loose jeans, but I prefer form-fitting jeans. And I'm sorry
if you think I'm whining. All I did was ask for advice on something I
thought your group might be able to help me with.

Peter Allen's reply was extremely helpful - Thanks, Peter!

So building my upper body is not
desirable because I don't want to look like a bodybuilder. Of course I know

Either way, what I said still applies --
    (1) mass on your legs will be last to go if the only body part you exercise is
    your legs
    (2) if you're female, lose some fat and chances are that a fair bit of that
will come from your lower half. The result -- you end up smaller but more
    compact/shapely. HTH
    (3) getting smaller overall amounts to calories in versus calories out. You
probably will need to change the balance. You will probably need to get smaller
overall to lose stuff on your legs (see (1 and 2 -- losing fat or losing
bulk off your legs both require losing overall weight))

Sorry, don't think anyone can resolve your fashion dilemma. If you want to
wear form fitting jeans *and* look like Barbie does in those jeans, you're
probably out of luck. You've got to work with what you've got genetics-wise.

  17. You might be doing way too much volume training with weights. Most
bodybuilders in order to grow more muscle do more volume. Most anyone
who works out won't fit in jeans, the mainstream is not fit. Blame it
on genes, and love your body the way it is. Try a (Indoor Bike)
Spinning class, because of the low resistance. Good Luck. Dan
