  1. Did my increasingly regular Tuesday 45-miler today. Boy, is it *hot* out
    there! The dwon side was that the reading od 32 on my ccycle computer was
    not mph, but was celsius... Even slavering Factor 30 over self, I have
    'caught the sun'. BAH!

    Not quite. The "speed of the sun" isn't the speed of light. Our sun is
    orbiting the galactic core at an (estimated) velocity of about 220km/s.

    Though you wouldn't need to reach that speed either as we're being
    dragged* along with it. All you'd have to do is reach escape velocity
    (about 11km/s) on the bike and you'd get there eventually.

    Since the sun is 150,000,000 km away, it would only take about 5 years.
    You'd need some pretty big panniers, but on the other hand you wouldn't
    need spare tubes as the ride would be virtually frictionless. You would
    need to figure out how to incorporate some radiation shielding, but I'm
    sure a regular bicycle helmet would be more than adequate.

    Can we expect "ESE" (Earth-Sun-Earth) to be included on next year's
    Audax calendar? That'll give those hardcore LEL folks something to get
    their teeth into...

    Tuesday is my regular two-telecons-in-an-afternoon day. So I'm
    stuck at a computer in a south-facing room, rather than pedalling
    across the moors to a nice swim-spot and enjoying :-(

    20 minutes to go 'til the second telecon. Shall I be utterly
    irresponsible and get that Weizenbier out of the fridge?

    Ah, but think of the upside. With the new slimline Wafflycat,
    there is much less surface area to catch the sun.
    And also less expenditure on factor 30 I bet.

    Indeed.

    I suppose another interpretation of 'catching the sun' is
    keeping up with the dawn (technically called the terminator I think?)
    as Concorde was reputed to do.

    As it takes 24 hours for the sunrise line to sweep around the earth,
    and the earth's circumference at the equator is 40076km,
    that's 1670 km/hour at the equator.
    But you would get your feet wet and your chain rusty.

    My thoughts exactly - I'd much rather a spot of mild sunburn than the
    various problems work has been throwing up for me today... especially
    if that sunburn came as the result of a nice long bike ride. :-(

    (Don't have any Weizenbier in the fridge either, though I do have three
    bottles of Sierra Nevada Summerfest waiting to be sampled when I
    /eventually/ get home tonight...)

    I understood that a kilometre was 1/10000 the distance from pole to
    equator, or 1/40000 the circumference of the Earth going through the
    poles, which is less than the distance around the equator.

    Hehe. Well, I nipped round to the local greengrocer and found they
    had watermelons - another great hot-weather refreshment. Saved the
    booze for after the high-stress calls. I.e. now :-)

    That would be the original definition by the French revolutionaries.

    SI units these days are based upon other measurements.
    A metre today is defined as distance that light travels in a certain
    amount of time, as time can be measured extremely accurately.

    Hot yesterday too, did 6 miles around town with my 8 year old delivering
    start of term notes to our Beaver Scouts, left him knackered, even with
    regular drinks, quiet roads as well thankfully, unlike today....
