Most kids are basically good. Middle-school kids are an interesting bunch,
especially the guys, because they never, ever want to smile in their
pictures.

It wastes everybody's time to have to force a smile out of a basically
uncooperative subject, so I've developed a trick: I ask them straight--
"Are you going to smile for this picture?"

Most of the time, it catches them so off-guard, their pretenses drop and
they give a great big natural smile. If I'm good, I can trip the shutter
before they realise what they've done.

Yup, I'm sneaky.

I recently had the chance to judge a bike rodeo for kids and ran into a
young fellow around 7 who was wearing a USPS jersey. When I mentioned I
would really like a jersey like his he said "My grandpa bought mine. Maybe
he'll buy one for you".

I had the chance to talk with his grandpa later and mentioned he needed a
new Trek to go with that jersey. He said that was a great idea for his
upcoming birthday. Where were these types of grandparents when I was
growing up<g>

I carry a camera with me everywhere just so I can get some of those
um (Kodak?) moments. Most of my groupies are girls from 7 to 13 as
a result of my granddaughter being 9 and living next door to me.
The girls are always ready to ham it up for the camera but the few
boys are too busy trying to impress each other so I never get them
on camera. It is never boring, girls talking and boys crashing. Funny
how that works, 12 year old boys are idiots, makes me wonder how I
survived that period. The girls at least are sensible riders with no
daredevils among them so I only carry a cell phone in case one of the
2 boys crashes badly. So far we have all been lucky. No exercise in
these rides but no boredom either. This is the only biking group I
can get together since the adults have more important things to do,
like watching television. I hope that some of these kids keep the
idea of bicycling as a social exercise into adulthood.
