While in a pub in Ireland, a local came up to me, noticing
my Yankee accent, asking where I was from and could he buy
me a pint. I accepted and he invited me to join the 'lads'.
I remember now that he was sitting with a single companion
and while he was buying my drink others from around the pub
joined his friend at his table.

When subsequently I joined the crowd and had been introduced
around to the many now crowding the table it was announced,
"Your turn, Yank".

That scam was tried on me throughout out much of Ireland
and the remainder of the UK. The only defense is an
active offense. So buying the very first local you meet a
drink first draws many a discouraged and bemoaned fate.
It also starts up some very lively friendships - even if
short-lived.

I have never been on holiday to Ireland can you recommend
the best places to stay and are the locals that jump out on
you friendly??

There is some great walking in Kerry, lots of good B&B and
the locals are friendly in the extreme.

The locals are extremely friendly despite my comments about
the tiny number who "jump out on you" - only in big tourist
areas and usually wanting you to hire a pony & trap! And
it's a wonderful country. As to where is best to stay - what
do you want to experience? City life (Dublin is vibrant) or
wild country (I suggest Cork, Kerry or Connemara.

By the way, Christine, if you're a student posting in order
to satisfy your course syllabus (guessing from your email
address), please be aware that this newsgroup is plagued by
spates of utterly inane postings which are highly
aggravating to regulars hereabouts. However, you've lifted
yourself way above the level of most others by giving
evidence that you've actually taken the trouble to read the
group first and contribute to an existing thread - which is
why I've given you a sensible reply! If that's the case,
well done. If I'm mistaken, please ignore this paragraph and
have a good time when you visit Ireland!

we had a nice stay ("car trekking", meaning sleeping in the
car / tent) at the Dingle peninsula last year, as well as
driving up the West Coast from Killarney up to Connemara.
Breathtaking landscape, Cliffs of Moher, The Burren, und
such. Friendly locals? Yeah, for sure ! We hardly can wait
'til the next trip!

Yep, we did the same, car and tent.

Wild place, beautiful scenery and very friendly people.
Guinness and wicked seafood to. Most pubs were packed to
bursting of an evening.

I want to go back again, no worries!
