Hogmanay (New Year)

This year will be light. My wife and I will be going to a neighbors house to celebrate. Her husband (neighbors) will be in Tucson for the holidays so we will go over and keep her company. We'll build a log fire outside and have a little Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, wine and little Jagermeister if it gets cold enough (it'll be cold enough). We will probably be joined by some neighbors up the road as well.

My wife and I will go to a new restaurant opened by one of our in-laws tomorrow night, and then we'll go on to the local pub to meet neighbours and friends.
That pretty much sums up our way of seeing in the New Year.

Yes, we will stay away from the fire balls this year too. When we first moved in to this neck of the woods there was I fellow by the last name of Duncan who used to play Auld Lang Syne on the War Pipes at mid-night. That was real nice, the sound would echo for miles in the hills.

I'm going to celebrate New Year when it gets to New York (9pm California time). Then ride up Mt. Diablo at 9am on the 1st with a couple dozen other riders - (also a popular time for joggers and unicyclists up there)

And according to my World Clock, Ireland is on GMT so 2006 is less than an hour away for Lim and our UK members as I write this.

Are you sure you've got the right day there, Diablo? Ireland is 8 hours behind Borneo (chronologically and culturally 😄 ) and we've still got 15 hours and 37 minutes to go.

I'm headed for a quiet night (I hope). Last night started quiet but went for a bloody long time, and it wasn't easy dragging the carcasse off to work at 4:30 this morning. I'm supposed to go to a local Iban family's house for dinner tonight - I hope I don't fall asleep in the soup.

It's now 1.00am (approx) on the morning of 31st December 2005.
Approximately 23 hours to go to midnight on 31st December 2005.

Eoin C : chronologically Borneo is eight hours ahead of us - which means you're now well in to the last day of 2005.
Our friend on the west coast of America is approx 8 hours behind us - which means he still has a fair chunk of the 30th remaining to get through before
entering the final day of the year.

Hope you have a good celebration in Borneo.

T'was -7c in Britain during the past few days.
Snow/frost/sleet.

Not too bad here - temps between 5 and 10 c.
Cold by Southeast Asia standards but not too bad nontheless.

Had a blast with a few friends, we had a power black out all night but it was fun. I had a few too many Taliskers so the very end of the night (morning) is a bit blurry...

Diablo Scott, sounds like a great way to start the new year...cycling up that mountain....i am coming to Santa Clara (San Jose) for a month or two in July. We'll def. meet up....i better get training. 😄

The MOUNTAIN was closed on Ne'er day - due to mudslides and bad weather (see blog)... never happens in July so train anyway.

BART doesn't go to Santa Clara so you'll need a car (automobile) to get here... we drive on the right, e-mail me for directions.

I presume Talisker is a single-malt? Bring some... even though I usually prefer Spanish brandy.

I ended up having a fairly quiet one. Got a little pishy at lunchtime when my mate and I headed across the road from work for a session on Tsing Tao. Another business colleague turned up and it went on longer than planned. I fell asleep when I got home, but went out later with a mate for a few in the old part of town. I never really got back up to speed and ended up crashing before midnight. No children or animals were hurt in the making of this New Year's Eve.
Next day was good, though. First time I've been able to sleep past 04:00 for many months. Still got to work by 06:00, for another day of fun and hijinks...

2005 went out with a bang. (Dec.30-31), 6 inches of rain in 24hrs in the Sierra Nevada's. French Creek in some places rose 12', I had 3.5 acres flooded out and 3 feet of water raging over the top of the bridge to the main road, Whoo-Hooo ! We had 11-families stranded for 24 hours before it went down enough to drive a 4-wheel drive over the top.

Isle of Skye Malt...I am more of a Speyside man myself, i find the Hebridean malts too peaty for my palate.
i am thinking of posting my bike ahead of me....but i dont know if it will be my road bike or mtb...what do you suggest?

I suggest both. You'd be able to ride your road bike from wherever you'll be staying right to some great roads. You'll have to haul your MTB by car to get to some decent trails... but there are lots of them.

Buy yourself a cycling case and load your bike in to it - and book it as luggage
for the flight.

I did that for a trip to Sicily in April last and everthing worked out fine.
Bike arrived in one piece and it was great to have my bike in a foreign territory
on excellent roads.
It's well worth it!

would it just be considered another piece of check-in luggage?

we flew American Airlines last time, they lost our luggage on the way out and again on the way home. we never did get it back.

what airline company do you suggest for LHR to LAX?
